Extended Half-day Morning Inshore Fishing Charter
Get ready for five solid hours of fishing some of the most productive inshore waters on the Gulf Coast. This extended morning charter gives you plenty of time to work the flats, grass beds, and oyster bars around Pensacola Bay without feeling rushed. Whether you're a weekend warrior or just getting your feet wet, our experienced captain will put you on fish while sharing local knowledge that only comes from years of reading these waters. We keep groups small at just four anglers max, so everyone gets personal attention and prime rod time.
What to Expect on the Water
Your morning starts early – and trust me, that's when the magic happens. We'll be running lines by sunrise, hitting spots where the baitfish are thick and the predators are feeding. The beauty of a five-hour trip is we can cover serious ground, from the shallow grass flats near the state park to the deeper cuts around the bay bridges. You'll fish multiple techniques throughout the morning as conditions change and fish move with the tides. The boat is equipped with everything you need, including quality rods, reels, and a full selection of lures and live bait. All you need to bring is your fishing license, some snacks if you get hungry, and maybe a cooler for your catch.
Techniques and Top Spots
We'll be sight fishing the flats when the water's clear, looking for tailing redfish and cruising trout in knee-deep water. This is pure visual fishing – watching your target before you cast. When the fish are holding deeper, we'll switch to live bait under popping corks or work soft plastics along drop-offs and structure. The jig bite can be lights-out here, especially around oyster bars and bridge pilings where baitfish get pinned up. We carry live shrimp, pinfish, and croakers depending on what's working best that week. Artificial-wise, you'll throw everything from topwater plugs at dawn to paddle tails and jerk baits as the sun climbs higher. The key is staying mobile and adapting to what the fish want that particular morning.
Target Species
King Mackerel show up in good numbers during their spring and fall migrations, typically from April through June and again in September and October. These speedsters average 15-30 pounds around here, though we see plenty of smoker kings pushing 40-plus. They're absolute rockets when hooked, making blistering runs that'll test your drag and your nerves. We usually find them around the deeper channels and structure, especially when the bait schools are thick.
Redfish are the bread and butter of Pensacola inshore fishing, and for good reason. These copper-colored bruisers are here year-round, though fall brings the best action when they school up in massive numbers. Slot fish run 18-27 inches, but we regularly hook bulls over 30 inches that have to go back. They're bulldogs in shallow water, using their broad tails to make powerful runs toward structure. The sight fishing for reds on the flats is about as good as it gets.
Red Snapper might seem like an odd inshore target, but juvenile snappers love the deeper holes and artificial reefs in our bay system. These aren't the offshore giants, but 12-16 inch snapper are common catches, especially around bridge pilings and rock piles. They're scrappy fighters with great table fare, and always a pleasant surprise when you're expecting trout or redfish.
Spanish Mackerel are the perfect starter fish for kids and new anglers. They're aggressive, hit hard, and put up a good scrap for their size. Spring through fall, they'll be somewhere in the bay system, often near bait schools or current breaks. Most run 1-3 pounds, and they're excellent eating when kept fresh. They're also great bait for bigger fish when cut into strips.
Southern Flounder are the masters of disguise, lying buried in sand waiting to ambush prey. Fall is prime time for doormat flounder, when they're feeding heavily before their offshore spawning run. We target them around creek mouths, channel edges, and anywhere current brings food. A good flounder will fold your rod in half with that initial run, and anything over 18 inches makes for outstanding table fare.
