Night Fishing Key West: Wreck Sharks & Snappers
When the sun sets over Key West, that's when the real action starts. Our half-day night fishing adventure puts you right in the middle of some of the most productive fishing waters in South Florida. This isn't your typical sunset cruise – we're talking serious fishing under the stars, targeting the big predators that come alive after dark. At $750 for up to four anglers, you get a private charter that covers everything from tackle to local knowledge, making it one of the top-rated night fishing experiences in the Keys.
What to Expect on the Water
We push off at 7 PM when most boats are heading in, and that's exactly the point. The water cools down, baitfish move shallow, and the predators follow. Your captain will work everything from shallow mangrove channels where snapper hide in the roots, to offshore ledges and wrecks where the big stuff lives. We're not just fishing one spot either – this trip covers serious ground, hitting patch reefs, structure, and known shark hangouts. The boat's rigged with proper lighting for night work, and we've got everything from circle hooks for the snappers to wire leaders for anything with teeth. Four hours gives us plenty of time to work different techniques and really dial in what's biting.
Techniques & Target Structure
Night fishing is a whole different game, and we fish it right. We'll start working the mangroves with live bait and jigs, targeting those mutton and mangrove snappers that feed heavy after dark. The real money shots happen when we hit the wrecks and ledges – that's where the goliath grouper and big sharks patrol. We run everything from heavy bottom rigs with cut bait to live bait on floats, depending on what we're seeing on the fish finder. The barracuda bite is absolutely lights-out at night around structure, and when the sharks show up, we switch to wire and bigger baits. Your guide knows these waters inside and out, reading the current, structure, and conditions to put you on fish. All tackle is provided, but if you've got a favorite setup for big fish, bring it along.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Mutton Snapper are the bread and butter of this trip, and night fishing is when they really turn on. These fish push 15-20 pounds regularly around Key West, and they're smart – during the day they're spooky, but after dark they get aggressive and feed hard around structure. They've got serious shoulders on them and fight way bigger than you'd expect. Look for them around wrecks and ledges from spring through fall, with summer being absolutely prime time.
Goliath Grouper are the giants everyone talks about, and Key West has some legitimate monsters. These fish can push 200+ pounds and live around the same wrecks and structure we target for everything else. They're catch and release only, but hooking into one is something you'll never forget – they fight like submarines and test every piece of gear you've got. Night time is when they're most active, coming out of their holes to hunt.
Tarpon roll through Key West waters year-round, but spring and summer nights are when they really show up in numbers. These silver kings average 80-120 pounds in these waters and are absolutely electric when hooked. They jump, they run, and they fight harder than almost anything in the ocean. Night fishing gives you a shot at them without the daytime boat traffic.
Great Barracuda are apex predators that absolutely dominate the night bite around structure. Key West's 'cuda run big – 20 to 40+ pounds – and they're fast, aggressive, and always looking for a fight. They hit hard, make screaming runs, and those teeth mean business. They're also fantastic eating when prepared right, despite what some people think.
Blacktip Sharks are constant around Key West and absolutely love the night bite. These fish are pure muscle, averaging 30-60 pounds, and they fight clean with long runs and aerial shows. They're perfect for beginners to shark fishing but still give experienced anglers a serious workout. Spring through fall is prime time, and they'll hit both live and cut bait around any structure.
