Half Day & Full Day Fishing in Panama City Beach
Looking for a top-rated fishing charter that delivers both quality fish and a great time on the water? King Slayer Charters has been putting anglers on fish in Panama City Beach's prime waters, and Captain John Corlett knows exactly where the Spanish mackerel are schooling and the grouper are holding. Whether you're an early bird ready to hit the water at 4:55 AM for a full day adventure or prefer a more relaxed 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM trip, we've got options that fit your schedule. Operating seasonally from June 4 through July 31 when the fishing is absolutely fire, you'll have your choice between inshore action or offshore trolling depending on what's biting best.
What to Expect on the Water
Captain John runs a tight ship that's clean, well-maintained, and equipped for success. You're looking at a maximum of 6 anglers per trip, which means plenty of room to fish without getting tangled up in each other's lines. All your tackle and gear come included - no need to worry about bringing rods, reels, or terminal tackle. We keep fresh bait onboard, so you're always fishing with quality stuff that the fish actually want to eat. The boat's set up for both inshore work around the structure and offshore trolling in the blue water, so we can adapt to conditions and follow the bite. Don't forget to pack sunscreen, a hat, and maybe some snacks if you're doing the longer trips. The Gulf can get hot, and you'll want to stay comfortable while you're putting fish in the boat.
Trolling Tactics & Gear Setup
When we're targeting pelagics like king mackerel and mahi, we'll be running a spread of trolling lures and live bait rigs. The boat's rigged with quality downriggers and outriggers to keep your baits in the strike zone at the right depths. For the bottom fishing action on grouper and amberjack, we're talking heavy conventional tackle with enough backbone to pull big fish up from structure. Captain John knows the local ledges, wrecks, and hard bottom areas where the gag grouper like to hang out. We'll anchor up or drift depending on current and wind conditions. The inshore trips focus more on lighter tackle and varied presentations - casting jigs, working live bait around grass flats, and hitting the structure where Spanish mackerel and other species are feeding. Every trip includes a tackle briefing so you know what you're working with and how to get the most out of your time on the water.

Species You'll Want to Hook
Spanish mackerel are one of the most fun fish you'll target on these trips. These silver rockets typically run 1-3 pounds and fight way above their weight class. They're most active during the warmer months, which lines up perfectly with our season. You'll find them schooling around structure, bait balls, and grass flats. They hit fast and run hard, making them perfect for lighter tackle action. The bite is usually best early morning and late afternoon when they're feeding aggressively on glass minnows and other small baitfish.
Gag grouper are the bread and butter bottom fish that every angler wants to tangle with. These guys can push 20-30 pounds and are known for their bulldog fight and excellent table fare. They hold tight to structure like ledges, wrecks, and hard bottom areas in 60-120 feet of water. The key is getting your bait down to them quickly before they have time to think about it. Once hooked, they'll try to get back to their hole, so you need to put pressure on them right away. Gags are regulated pretty heavily, so Captain John knows the current size and bag limits to keep you legal.
King mackerel are the speed demons of the offshore world, capable of reaching 40+ pounds in these waters. They're built for speed with razor-sharp teeth and an attitude to match. Kings love trolling presentations, especially when we're pulling live bait or large spoons behind the boat. The fight is spectacular - they'll make blistering runs and jump repeatedly trying to throw the hook. Peak season runs through summer when water temperatures are optimal and bait concentrations are thick offshore.
Mahi mahi, or dolphinfish, are hands down one of the most beautiful and exciting fish you can catch in the Gulf. These golden, green, and blue beauties are pure muscle and acrobatics. They school around floating debris, weed lines, and temperature breaks in blue water. When you find one mahi, there are usually more in the area. They hit trolled baits hard and put on an aerial show that'll have you hooting and hollering. Plus, they're some of the best eating fish in the ocean.
Greater amberjack are the heavyweight bruisers that will test your tackle and your stamina. These fish can easily exceed 50 pounds and fight like they're twice that size. They live around deep structure and wrecks where they ambush baitfish and smaller fish. The initial run from a big AJ will shock you - they're incredibly powerful and don't give up easily.
