Morning Lake Ontario Salmon and Trout Charter
There's something special about being on Lake Ontario at first light, watching the sunrise paint the water while you're rigged up and ready for some serious fish. Our 6-hour morning charter out of Oswego puts you right in the heart of some of the Great Lakes' best salmon and trout fishing. We push off at 6 am sharp and have you back at the dock by noon, giving you plenty of time to clean your catch and still have the rest of your day. Whether you're bringing the family for their first taste of big lake fishing or you're a seasoned angler looking to add some Lake Ontario trophies to your collection, this trip delivers consistent action on multiple species.
What to Expect on the Water
Lake Ontario fishing is a whole different ballgame from your typical inland lakes, and that's exactly what makes it so rewarding. We'll motor out from Oswego harbor into deeper water where the thermocline holds the baitfish, and that's where our target species like to hang out. The morning hours are prime time – the lake's typically calmer, the fish are more active after feeding all night, and you've got the best chance at hooking into something memorable. Our boat comes fully equipped with downriggers, planer boards, and all the tackle you'll need. I provide the rods, reels, lures, and bait – you just need to bring yourself and maybe a cooler for your catch. The morning bite usually starts strong and can stay hot right through mid-morning, especially when we find those temperature breaks where the cold water meets the warmer surface layer.
Trolling Tactics & Gear Setup
Lake Ontario fishing is primarily a trolling game, and we've got it dialed in perfectly for these waters. We'll run a spread of downriggers to get our spoons and plugs down to where the fish are holding, typically anywhere from 30 to 100 feet down depending on the season and water temperature. Spoons like NK28s, Stingers, and Pro Kings are go-to choices, along with body baits and cut bait rigs when the situation calls for it. The planer boards let us cover more water and keep our lines away from the boat – crucial for spooky trout that don't like engine noise. I'll adjust our speed, depth, and lure selection based on what the fish are telling us, and part of the fun is learning to read the electronics and understand what we're seeing down there. GPS and fish finders are your best friends out here, helping us locate structure, bait schools, and those temperature breaks that hold fish.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Coho salmon are absolute blast to catch and fight harder than fish twice their size. These silver rockets typically run 8-15 pounds in Lake Ontario and are known for their acrobatic jumps and blistering runs. They're most active in the upper water column during spring and fall, making them perfect targets for our morning trips. When a coho hits your line, you'll know it immediately – they don't mess around. Their aggressive feeding behavior makes them one of the most reliable species to target, and their firm, pink meat makes them a favorite for the dinner table too.
Chinook salmon are the kings of Lake Ontario for good reason. These bruisers can push 30+ pounds and will test every bit of your tackle and technique. They tend to hold deeper than cohos and prefer larger bait presentations. The fight from a big king is something every angler should experience at least once – they'll take you into your backing and make multiple powerful runs that'll leave your arms burning. Peak chinook action happens during their pre-spawn staging in late summer, but we catch them consistently throughout the season in the deeper, cooler water.
Brown trout are the crafty veterans of Lake Ontario, and they're absolutely gorgeous fish with their golden flanks and distinctive spots. They can be finicky feeders, which makes landing one even more satisfying. Browns often cruise the thermocline looking for alewives and smelt, and they have a reputation for being line-shy, so we use lighter leaders and more natural presentations. A 10-pound Lake Ontario brown trout is a trophy that many anglers chase for years. They fight smart rather than flashy, using their head-shaking ability to throw hooks.
Lake trout are the natives here and can live for decades in these cold, deep waters. They're typically the deepest dwelling of our target species, often found in 60-120 feet of water even during summer months. Lakers have a distinctive forked tail and can reach impressive sizes – 20-pounders aren't uncommon. They prefer colder water year-round, making them a consistent target even when other species move around seasonally. Their firm, white meat has a unique flavor that's prized by those who know how to prepare it properly.
