We've been running these waters for years, and let me tell you – Ontario's got some of the best fishing you'll find anywhere. You don't need to worry about bringing a single piece of gear because we've got you covered with top-shelf rods, reels, tackle, and all the safety equipment. Just grab your cooler for the catch and come ready to have some serious fun on the water.
What to Expect on the Water
The Legend X20 is built for comfort and performance, which means you'll have plenty of room to move around while we work the lake. We keep our groups small – just three anglers max – so everyone gets personal attention and prime fishing spots. Lake Ontario's a massive body of water, but don't worry about getting seasick or dealing with rough conditions. We know exactly where the fish are holding based on water temperature, current conditions, and seasonal patterns. The vibe is laid-back but focused. We're here to put you on fish, and that means reading the water, adjusting our approach, and making sure your lines are in the most productive zones. Expect to cover some serious water as we move between hot spots, and be ready for anything from steady action to sudden bursts of fish that'll keep you busy for hours.
Trolling Techniques & Gear
We run trolling setups exclusively on this trip because it's hands-down the most effective way to cover water and find active fish on Ontario. Our downriggers let us get baits down to the exact depth where the fish are feeding, whether that's 20 feet or 120 feet down. We'll have multiple lines in the water using a mix of spoons, plugs, and cut bait depending on what the fish are hitting. The beauty of trolling is that it lets us stay mobile and work different depths and structures throughout the day. Our tackle boxes are stocked with proven Lake Ontario producers – stuff like Stinger spoons, Thundersticks, and fresh-cut alewives that these fish can't resist. The rods we use are specifically set up for Great Lakes fishing with the right action and line capacity to handle everything from scrappy Coho to monster King salmon. You'll learn how to read the electronics, watch for strikes, and work fish properly so they don't throw the hook during the fight.
Target Species
Walleye are the bread and butter of Lake Ontario, and for good reason. These fish average 3-6 pounds with plenty of bigger ones mixed in, and they're absolutely fantastic on the dinner table. Walleye bite best during low-light conditions – early morning and late evening – which is perfect timing for our trips. They school up in massive numbers during spring and fall, making for some seriously hot action when we find them. What makes walleye so fun to catch is their subtle bite and the way they fight with head shakes and runs toward deeper water. They're not flashy fighters, but landing a limit of quality 'eyes is something every angler should experience.
Coho Salmon, also called Silver salmon, are pure adrenaline on a fishing rod. These fish typically run 5-12 pounds and fight like they're twice that size. They're acrobatic fighters that'll jump clear out of the water multiple times during the fight, which makes for some incredible photo opportunities. Coho are most active from late spring through early fall, and they respond well to bright spoons and plugs trolled at moderate speeds. The great thing about Coho is their willingness to bite throughout the day, not just during prime time hours. When you hook into a fresh Coho, expect a battle that'll test your skills and get your heart pumping.
Chinook Salmon are the kings of Lake Ontario for a reason – these fish can reach 20-30 pounds or more and provide fights that anglers talk about for years. King salmon prefer deeper, cooler water and are typically found in 80-200 feet of water during summer months. They're known for their powerful, sustained runs and their ability to strip line off the reel like it's nothing. The bite can be subtle for such large fish, but once they realize they're hooked, it's game on. Chinook are most active during spring and fall when they move into shallower water, but we target them year-round using deep trolling techniques.
Lake Trout are the native predators of the Great Lakes and represent some of the most consistent fishing Ontario has to offer. These fish live in the deepest, coldest parts of the lake and can reach impressive sizes – 10-20 pounders are common, with some true giants lurking in the depths. Lakers are structure-oriented fish that relate to underwater humps, drop-offs, and rocky areas. They're not the flashiest fighters, but they make up for it with their dogged determination and the satisfaction of pulling them up from 100+ feet of water. Lake trout bite year-round and provide excellent action when other species are finicky.
