Port Aransas Family Fishing Charters
Looking for a fishing trip that works for everyone in the family? Mark's Guide Service has dialed in the perfect 4-hour charter that gets kids and adults alike hooked on inshore fishing. We're talking about real fishing here – not just a boat ride with poles. You'll be targeting some of the best eating fish in Texas waters, including Black Drum, Redfish, Sea Trout, and Sheepshead, all while working the productive flats and channels around Port Aransas. This isn't a cattle boat operation either – we keep it intimate with just 2 guests max, so everyone gets personal attention and plenty of shots at fish. Plus, the dolphins around here love to put on a show, especially when we're working the deeper cuts near the jetties.
What to Expect on the Water
Your day starts early when the fish are most active and the Texas sun hasn't turned the flats into a furnace yet. We'll launch from one of Port Aransas' top-rated marinas and head straight to where the fish are biting – could be the grass flats behind San Jose Island, the deeper pockets around the jetties, or those productive oyster reefs that hold so much bait. The beauty of a 4-hour trip is we can hit multiple spots without wearing out the kids or making it feel like work. Your guide knows these waters like the back of his hand, from the seasonal patterns to which lures are producing on any given day. We keep things moving, so if one spot isn't firing, we're already heading to the next honey hole. The boat stays comfortable with plenty of shade, and we've got all the safety gear dialed in for family trips.
Light Tackle Fishing Techniques
We fish light tackle here because it's way more fun when everyone can feel the fight, especially the younger anglers. You'll be working everything from soft plastics on 1/8-ounce jig heads to live shrimp under popping corks – whatever's working best that day. The guide provides all the gear, from the rods and reels down to the tackle box, so you don't need to stress about bringing anything except sunscreen and snacks. We'll teach proper casting techniques, how to work different baits, and most importantly, how to set the hook when you get that bite. The kids usually pick it up fast, and before you know it, they're out-fishing the adults. When we're targeting Redfish in shallow water, you might be sight-casting to tailing fish – that's when things get really exciting. For the deeper structure fishing, we'll show you how to feel the bottom and work baits through the strike zone where Sheepshead and Black Drum like to hang out.
Top Catches This Season
Black Drum are the bulldogs of the Texas coast, and Port Aransas has some of the best Black Drum fishing you'll find anywhere. These fish love structure – think jetties, reefs, and bridge pilings – where they cruise around munching on crabs and shrimp. They're not the prettiest fish in the bay, but when a 20-pound Black Drum grabs your bait, you'll know it immediately. They pull like freight trains and don't give up easy. Best part is they bite year-round, though spring and fall produce the biggest fish. Kids love them because they're almost guaranteed to bend the rod, and they're excellent eating when you keep the smaller ones under 15 pounds.
Sheepshead might be the trickiest fish we target, but they're also some of the best eating in the Gulf. These black and white striped convicts have human-like teeth for crushing barnacles and crabs, which makes them notorious bait stealers. You've got to stay sharp and set the hook at the first sign of pressure – they're masters at cleaning your hook without getting caught. We find them around any hard structure, especially the jetties and oil rigs. They're most active in cooler months, from November through March, when they school up thick. Landing a few nice Sheepshead is like earning a badge of honor – it means you're developing some real fishing skills.
Sea Trout are the bread and butter of Texas inshore fishing, and for good reason. They're beautiful fish with big mouths full of canine teeth, and they'll eat just about any bait you put in front of them. The best Trout fishing happens over grass flats in 2-4 feet of water, especially during low light periods. They're perfect for teaching kids because they're aggressive biters and fight well on light tackle. Spring and fall are peak seasons, but we catch them year-round. A good Trout makes excellent table fare, and there's nothing quite like the sound they make when they break the surface – that distinctive grunt that lets you know you've got a keeper.
Redfish are the crown jewel of Texas inshore fishing, and Port Aransas serves up some world-class Red fishing opportunities. These bronze-colored bruisers with the distinctive black spot near their tail are built for shallow water battles. When we find them tailing in 18 inches of water, hearts start pumping fast. Reds are smart, strong, and stubborn – they'll make multiple runs and test your drag system. They're most active during spring and fall, but we target them successfully all year. The slot-size fish (20-28 inches) are fantastic eating, while the bigger bulls we catch and release to keep the population healthy. Nothing beats watching a kid's face when their first Redfish makes that initial screaming run.
