Wahoo are the speed freaks of the offshore world, hitting trolled baits at 40+ mph. When a wahoo eats, you'll know it – the reel just explodes. They're typically smaller than the other species we target, running 15-50 pounds, but pound for pound they're some of the hardest fighting fish in the Gulf. Fall and winter are prime wahoo time when the water cools down and they move closer to our fishing grounds.

Pro tip: once you hook one, keep that reel locked tight and your rod tip low. Don't give them any slack or they'll dive into the structure and cut you off on the rocks.
Epinephelus ItajaraThese massive fish are the giants of our reefs, reaching up to 8 feet and 800 pounds. You'll spot them around shallow coral reefs, wrecks, and structures in 60-150 feet of water. They're actually protected, so it's strictly catch-and-release, but the experience is worth it. Summer months bring the best opportunities when they're most active. What guests love is that raw power - that first pull can literally drag you across the deck if you're not ready. They eat crabs, rays, and slow-moving fish, so big baits work best. The fight is intense but usually short-lived since they're ambush predators, not endurance swimmers. My advice: use the heaviest tackle you've got - 80-wide reels and 400+ pound line. What makes them special is that blistering speed - they'll scream line off your reel like few other fish. Plus, they're excellent eating with firm, flaky meat. We typically troll with live bait or spoons at 6-8 knots, covering water until we find them. They're notorious for hitting the back half of your bait with those razor-sharp teeth, so always use wire leaders. Here's a local trick: rig two hooks on your live bait - one in the nose, one trailing near the tail. That way you'll hook them no matter where they strike.
Acanthocybium SolandriWahoo are the speed demons of the Gulf, hitting 60+ mph and averaging 3-5 feet long. We find them in open water and around floating debris in 60+ feet, especially during summer and fall months. July through November is peak season here in Destin. What makes them special is that lightning-fast strike and the quality of the meat - it's some of the best eating fish out there. We high-speed troll at 12-15 knots with wire leaders since their razor teeth will cut through anything else. They often travel alone or in small groups, so when you get one, work the area hard for more. Pro tip: use bright-colored lures and vary your trolling speeds. Sometimes slowing down to 8 knots with ballyhoo can trigger strikes when high-speed isn't working. Their colors fade fast once boated, so get your photos quick.
