Private 5 Hour Morning Fishing Trip
There's something magical about being on Lake Superior at sunrise, lines in the water, waiting for that first strike of the day. Our private 5-hour morning charter out of Barker's Island puts you right in the heart of some of the Midwest's best fishing action. Captain Ben and Grace know these waters like the back of their hand, and they'll put you on fish whether you're casting your first line or you've been chasing lake trout for decades. We're talking about world-class fishing in one of the Great Lakes' most productive areas, and you'll have it all to yourself with just your group of up to four anglers.
What to Expect on the Water
We shove off from Barker's Island at 5:45 AM sharp – yeah, it's early, but that's when the fish are most active and the lake is at its calmest. You'll have five solid hours to work the water before heading back to the dock at 11:00 AM. The beauty of a private charter is that we can adjust our game plan based on what's biting and what you want to target. Some days the coho are running hot in the shallows, other days we're dropping deep for lake trout in 80 feet of water. Our crew reads the conditions daily and knows exactly where to position the boat for the best action. Don't worry about gear – we've got top-rated rods, reels, and a tackle box full of proven lures that produce results on Superior.
Trolling Techniques & Gear
Most of our fishing happens while trolling, which means we're moving at a steady pace while dragging multiple lines behind the boat. This technique covers a lot of water and keeps your baits in the strike zone longer. We run everything from shallow diving crankbaits for salmon to heavy spoons and flasher rigs for the deeper trout. The crew handles all the technical stuff – setting the downriggers, adjusting speeds based on fish finder readings, and switching up lures when the bite slows down. You just focus on fighting the fish when they hit. Our boat is equipped with quality electronics including GPS and fish finders, so we're not just guessing where the fish are hanging out.

Species You'll Want to Hook
Walleye are the bread and butter of Superior fishing, and these golden beauties are active year-round in our area. They typically run 15 to 24 inches with some bigger ones pushing 28 inches if you're lucky. Early morning is prime time for walleye since they move into shallower water to feed as the sun comes up. What makes them so popular is they fight just hard enough to be fun without wearing you out, plus they're hands-down the best eating fish in the lake. We find them anywhere from 20 to 60 feet deep, usually relating to structure or temperature breaks.
Coho salmon bring the excitement level up a notch with their aerial acrobatics and strong runs. These silver rockets average 3 to 8 pounds and are most active during spring and fall migrations. When a coho hits your line, you'll know it – they take off like a shot and often jump multiple times trying to shake the hook. The key to coho fishing is staying near temperature breaks and thermoclines where they concentrate to feed on baitfish. Their aggressive nature makes them a customer favorite, especially for anglers who want some real action on their line.
Chinook salmon are the heavyweights of Lake Superior, with fish ranging from 8 to 20 pounds and occasional monsters pushing even bigger. These kings are bulldogs – they don't jump much but they'll take you on long, powerful runs that test your drag and your patience. Peak season runs from late spring through early fall when they're feeding heavily in preparation for spawning. Landing a chinook is a true accomplishment and the kind of fish that makes for great photos and even better stories back home.
Brown trout are the wild cards that keep every trip interesting. These beautiful fish are known for their wariness and their ability to grow large in Superior's cold, nutrient-rich waters. Browns can range anywhere from 2 pounds up to legitimate 10-plus-pound trophies that have been roaming the lake for years. They're most active during low-light periods, which makes our early morning departure time perfect for connecting with a good one. Browns have a reputation for being smart and selective, so when you hook one, it feels like you've outsmarted one of the lake's craftiest residents.
Lake trout are Superior's native char and the backbone of our deep-water fishing. These fish live long and grow large, with average catches running 3 to 12 pounds and the occasional lake trout stretching into the teens or beyond. They prefer the cold, deep water that Superior provides year-round, usually holding anywhere from 40 to 120 feet deep depending on the season and water temperature. Lake trout have a distinctive look with their deeply forked tail and spotted pattern, and they're renowned for their firm, flaky meat. They're also one of the most reliable species we target – even on tough days, we can usually find lake trout willing to bite.
