10 Hour Extended Full Day Fishing in Ucluelet
If you're serious about fishing the legendary waters off Vancouver Island, this 10-hour charter with Captain Curtis and Overtime Charters is exactly what you're looking for. We're talking about a proper full day on the water – the kind where you'll actually have time to hit multiple spots, dial in your techniques, and really get into the rhythm of what these productive waters have to offer. Ucluelet sits right at the edge of the continental shelf, which means you're looking at some of the most consistent salmon and halibut fishing on the entire West Coast.
What to Expect on the Water
This isn't your typical rushed half-day trip where you barely get your sea legs before heading back to port. With 10 hours at your disposal, Captain Curtis can take you to his best spots without watching the clock. The boat itself is built for comfort during these extended runs – heated cabin with real seating where you can warm up between fish, plus plenty of deck space when you want to stay close to the action. We keep the group small at just 6 anglers max, so everyone gets personal attention and plenty of room to work. The waters around Ucluelet are known for their productivity year-round, with the Pacific shelf dropping off quickly just offshore. This creates the perfect conditions where salmon feed heavily and halibut patrol the deeper ledges and drop-offs.
Trolling Tactics and Gear
Most of the salmon fishing here happens by trolling, using downriggers to get your gear down to where the fish are holding. We'll be running a mix of spoons, hootchies, and cut-plug herring depending on what the fish are showing us that day. The beauty of having 10 hours is that we can really experiment – start with the classics and adjust based on what's working. For halibut, we'll anchor up over structure and drop heavy jigs or fresh bait right to the bottom. The gear is all top-shelf stuff, though you're welcome to bring your own rods if you've got favorites. Curtis knows these waters like the back of his hand, and he's not shy about moving spots if the bite slows down. That local knowledge makes all the difference when you're trying to make the most of your time on the water.
Customer Stories
"We started from Island West marina in Ucluelet on Capt. Curtis's Overtime charter. The boat is strong, sturdy and feels very safe. The cabin is very warm and dry if it happens to rain. Curtis is a knowledgeable captain who told me he has fished these waters for years. We had our two children aboard. Curtis immediately got them involved by teaching them to catch squid by themselves. Big bonus, they also caught salmon on the same poles they used fishing for squid. We got limits of Salmon and also went halibut fishing. We anchored up and had some lunch. Not much of a wait and we had fish on! We got four nice halibut and a surprise ling cod. We processed 165 pounds of fish for one day of fishing! Curtis said it's not always this good but judging from the boats around us, we were catching while they were fishing. It pays to go with experience. Bravo to Overtime Charters! Kid friendly family fun with a knowledgeable seasoned captain! No regrets. He really works hard to make it as enjoyable, safe and successful as possible. Great job!" - Samuel
"We had a great time with Curtis! He was friendly, funny and was focused on giving us a great experience. There was not a lot of fish being caught on the day we went out so he amazingly offered to take us out again the next day. We got to catch quite a bit more the next day. You can tell that he loves what he is doing and is having fun and it shows. Great experience. He also knows the waters and is persistent in finding the right area so that his customers can catch fish!" - Nathan
"Curtis put us on the fish quickly. We enjoyed the spacious boat and good equipment. He kept us engaged with lively conversation and a good time was had by all. Great experience for sure" - Allen
Species You'll Want to Hook
Chinook Salmon are the real prize fish in these waters, and for good reason. These are the kings of Pacific salmon – we're talking fish that regularly push 20-30 pounds, with the occasional monster going even bigger. They're here year-round but really turn on from May through September. What makes them so special to catch is that fight – they'll make long, powerful runs and really test your drag system. Plus, the meat quality is absolutely top-notch, with that rich, fatty texture that makes them perfect for grilling or smoking.
Coho Salmon might not get as heavy as the Chinooks, but pound for pound they're probably the most fun fish you'll hook out here. These silver rockets are absolutely acrobatic when hooked – jumping, tail-walking, and generally putting on a show. They average 8-12 pounds and are most active from July through October. Coho have this habit of staying near the surface, which often means lighter tackle and more exciting fights. Their meat is excellent too, with a slightly milder flavor than Chinook.
Pacific Halibut are what turn a good fishing day into something legendary. These flatfish can range anywhere from "chicken" halibut around 10-15 pounds up to true barn doors pushing 100+ pounds. The bigger fish are almost always females and can be decades old, so we practice selective harvest on the giants. What's amazing about halibut fishing is that you never know what's on the other end until you see it – they don't fight particularly hard on the way up, but that dead weight tells you you've got something substantial. Peak season runs from May through September, and they're found anywhere from 80 to 300+ feet of water.
Lingcod are the bonus fish that often surprise people with their prehistoric looks and aggressive attitude. These amb
