Deep Water Action Off Sarasota's Coast
Paradise Fly Sport Fishing takes you 30 miles out into the Gulf of Mexico for some of the best deep water fishing Sarasota has to offer. This isn't your typical inshore trip - we're talking about serious bottom fishing and reef structure where the big fish live. Our 6-hour offshore adventure targets the heavyweights: Gag Grouper, Red Grouper, King Mackerel, and both Greater and Lesser Amberjack. When you're ready to test your skills against fish that can actually fight back, this is your ticket to the deep blue.
What to Expect on the Water
Your day starts early because the best fishing happens when most people are still sleeping. We load up to 6 anglers on our well-equipped boat and make the run out to the productive waters where structure holds the fish we're after. The ride out gives you time to wake up, enjoy your coffee, and watch the coastline disappear behind us. Once we hit our spots, it's all business. We're talking about bottom-dropping techniques over reefs, ledges, and structure that holds these prized species. The water depth ranges from 60 to 120 feet, and you'll feel the difference when a big grouper decides to make a run for the rocks. Our crew knows these waters inside and out, so we're not just throwing lines over random spots - every location has been proven to produce fish. The 6-hour timeframe gives us plenty of opportunities to hit multiple spots and adjust our strategy based on what the fish are telling us.
Bottom Fishing & Reef Tactics
We focus on bottom fishing techniques that get results in these deeper waters. Heavy sinkers, circle hooks, and strong leaders are standard because these fish don't mess around. You'll be using quality rods and reels that can handle the pressure when a 20-pound grouper decides to head for cover. We provide all the tackle, so you don't need to worry about bringing the right gear. Live bait and cut bait both have their place, and our crew will set you up with whatever's working best that day. The reef structures we fish are home to a variety of species, which means you never know what might grab your bait next. One minute you're fighting a stubborn grouper, the next you might have a lightning-fast king mackerel screaming line off your reel. Circle hooks are required for grouper and snapper, and we'll make sure you understand the technique if you're not familiar with it. The key to success out here is patience combined with quick reflexes - when fish are biting, things happen fast.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Gag Grouper are the bread and butter of our offshore trips. These fish are smart, strong, and absolutely delicious. They hang around structure in 60-100 feet of water and can weigh anywhere from 5 to 30 pounds. What makes gags so exciting is their fighting style - they'll make a powerful run toward the rocks the second they feel the hook, testing both your drag and your nerves. Fall through early spring is prime time for gags, and they're known for their white, flaky meat that's perfect on the grill.
Red Grouper are another favorite target, especially when they're in season. These fish are typically smaller than gags but make up for it with their aggressive feeding behavior. Reds are more likely to be found in slightly deeper water and have a distinctive reddish coloration that makes them easy to identify. They're excellent table fare and tend to bite more consistently than their gag cousins.
King Mackerel bring a completely different energy to the trip. When kings are around, you'll know it - they hit baits with tremendous speed and make blistering runs that can strip 100 yards of line in seconds. These fish are built for speed, and fighting one is like holding onto a freight train. Kings can range from 10 to 40 pounds in our waters, and they're most active during the warmer months. Their meat is rich and oily, perfect for smoking or grilling.
Greater Amberjack are the bulldogs of the reef. These powerful fish can weigh 40 pounds or more and will give you an arm workout you won't forget. They're found around deeper structure and are known for their stubborn, head-shaking fight. AJs are most active in spring and fall, and while they're not always the best eating, the fight they put up makes them a favorite among serious anglers.
Lesser Amberjack are smaller versions of their greater cousins but still pack plenty of fight. They're more common in our area and provide consistent action when the bigger fish aren't cooperating. These fish are perfect for anglers who want to experience the amberjack fight without the back-breaking battle of the larger species.
