Half Day Ice Fishing in Michigan's Hottest Spots
When Michigan's lakes freeze solid, that's when the real fishing action begins. Our 6-hour guided ice fishing trips put you right on top of where the fish are holding, using proven techniques and local knowledge that only comes from years on these waters. Whether you're a first-timer who's never drilled a hole or a seasoned angler looking to dial in new spots, this trip delivers consistent action across multiple species. We'll set you up with everything you need and show you why Michigan ice fishing is some of the best in the Midwest.
What to Expect on the Ice
This isn't your typical "drop a line and hope" ice fishing trip. We're constantly moving, reading electronics, and adjusting tactics based on what the fish are telling us. You'll start in prime locations across Newaygo County, but we're not locked into one spot – if the bite slows down, we're packing up and hitting the next honey hole. Popular destinations include the productive waters around Saginaw River and Bay near Saginaw and Bay City, the crystal-clear depths of Big Star Lake in Baldwin, and the diverse fishery at Muskegon Lake. Lake Mitchell near Cadillac is another go-to spot when conditions are right. Each location offers something different, from shallow weed beds holding bluegill to deeper structure where walleye patrol. The beauty of a guided trip is you don't waste time figuring out where to start – we've already done the homework and know exactly where to punch holes for the best shot at steady action.
Gear and Techniques We Use
Success on the ice comes down to versatility, and that's exactly how we approach every trip. We run a combination of live bait presentations, artificial lures, and tip-up spreads to cover water and target different species simultaneously. Live minnows and waxworms are staples for crappie and bluegill, while larger shiners on tip-ups account for some of our biggest pike and walleye. Jigging spoons and tungsten jigs get worked aggressively when fish are active, and we'll switch to more finesse presentations when they're being picky. Electronics play a huge role – we're constantly watching our flashers to see how fish react to different presentations and adjust accordingly. You'll learn to read the signals and understand what the fish are doing below the ice. All rods, reels, bait, and terminal tackle are provided, along with a heated shelter when weather demands it. We'll have holes pre-drilled and tip-ups set before you arrive, so you can focus on fishing instead of setup.

Species You'll Want to Hook
Crappie are the bread and butter of Michigan ice fishing, and for good reason. These slab-sided panfish school up tight in winter, often suspending over deep basins or relating to submerged timber. Once you locate a school, the action can be non-stop. Michigan crappie average 10-12 inches with plenty of 13+ inch fish mixed in. They're most active during low light periods – early morning, late afternoon, and overcast days. What makes crappie so appealing is their light bite and the challenge of detecting subtle takes through the ice. When you hook into a big slab, that head-shaking fight is pure gold, especially on light tackle.
Walleye are the prize fish that keeps anglers coming back year after year. These golden-sided predators patrol deeper structure and drop-offs, hunting minnows and crawfish. Michigan's inland lakes produce quality walleye in the 15-18 inch range, with fish over 20 inches always a possibility. They typically bite best during twilight hours and after dark, making them perfect targets for longer ice fishing sessions. The firm, white meat makes walleye table fare second to none, and their deliberate bite followed by a strong run makes every hookup memorable. They're often found in 15-25 feet of water relating to humps, points, and weed edges.
Northern pike bring the aggression factor to ice fishing like no other species. These toothy predators lurk in shallow bays and weed flats, ambushing anything that moves. Michigan pike range from scrappy 20-inchers to genuine 30+ inch fish that'll test your drag and your nerves. They hit tip-ups with authority, often running with bait before stopping to turn it. The visual excitement of watching a tip-up flag pop and then battling a fish through an 8-inch hole never gets old. Pike are active throughout the day, making them reliable producers when other species are finicky.
American Yellow Perch offer fast-paced action that's perfect for keeping kids engaged and filling the cooler. These striped beauties travel in schools and once you find them, you can catch dozens. Michigan perch run 8-10 inches on average with jumbo 11+ inch fish mixed throughout. They prefer areas with sandy or rocky bottoms in 10-20 feet of water and respond well to small jigs t
