Picture this: you're standing on the deck of our boat at sunrise, coffee in hand, watching the morning fog lift off Bodega Bay while you prep your gear for what's shaping up to be an epic day of fishing. That's exactly what you'll get with our 8-hour shared fishing adventure, running from late September through the first week of November when the bite is absolutely on fire. We'll meet you at the dock at 6:30 AM sharp – yeah, it's early, but trust me, the fish don't care about your sleep schedule, and neither should you if you want to load the cooler.
This isn't your average weekend warrior trip – we're talking about a full 8 hours of serious fishing time on some of California's most productive inshore waters. Bodega Bay sits right at the sweet spot where the Russian River meets the Pacific, creating this perfect storm of nutrients and structure that pulls in everything from massive king salmon to hefty lingcod. You'll be sharing the boat with up to 4 other anglers (6 total capacity), which keeps things social and competitive in the best way possible. We've got all your gear covered – rods, reels, tackle, bait, ice, and we'll even clean and fillet your catch at the end of the day. Just bring your California fishing license, some snacks, and maybe a thermos of something warm for the early morning chill.
We run a mixed bag approach depending on what's biting that day, but you can expect to work everything from heavy tackle salmon trolling to bottom bouncing for rockfish and lingcod. When we're after kings, we'll set up with downriggers and run flasher-and-hoochie combos or whole anchovies at varying depths – typically anywhere from 40 to 120 feet down. The lingcod fishing is where things get really fun though. We'll anchor up over rocky structure and drop heavy jigs tipped with squid or live bait right down to the bottom. These fish hit hard and fight dirty, using every rock and crevice they can find to try and break you off. Depending on the day and the bite, we might also throw some crab rings over the side for Dungeness – nothing beats fresh crab to go with your salmon dinner.
The fall run in Bodega Bay is legendary for good reason. September through early November is when the coho and chinook salmon are stacked up thick, either heading to spawn or just fattening up before winter. We've been seeing fish in the 15 to 25-pound range regularly, with the occasional bruiser pushing 30-plus pounds. The lingcod bite has been absolutely ridiculous this season too – we're talking fish in the 10 to 20-pound class, with some real slabs pushing closer to 30. Rockfish are always reliable here, and you'll likely box your limit of various species including yellows, olives, and vermillion. The Dungeness crab season overlaps perfectly with our trip dates, so there's a good chance we'll pull up a few keepers to round out your seafood haul.
Chinook salmon are the real prize fish out here, and for good reason. These kings can grow massive in the Pacific – we're talking fish that can easily hit 20, 30, even 40 pounds if you're lucky. Fall is prime time because they're actively feeding and putting on weight before their spawning runs. What makes chinook so special is their fight – they'll make long, powerful runs and jump clear out of the water trying to throw your hook. The meat is absolutely primo too, with that rich, buttery texture that makes for perfect grilling or smoking. Best fishing is typically early morning and late afternoon when they're most active in the water column.
Lingcod are straight-up monsters and probably the most fun fish you'll tangle with on this trip. These things are pure ambush predators that lurk around rocky structure waiting to demolish anything that swims by. They've got massive mouths full of needle-sharp teeth and absolutely zero fear – I've seen 15-pound lings try to eat 10-pound salmon right at the boat. They fight completely different from salmon too, using their bulk and the bottom structure to try and wrap you up. The cool thing about lingcod is they're excellent eating despite their ugly appearance, with firm white meat that's perfect for fish and chips or grilling. Peak season runs right through our trip window, and the bigger fish are typically found in deeper water around 60 to 150 feet.
Look, this seasonal window is short and sweet – we're only running these trips from September 26 through November 1, and for good reason. This is when everything lines up perfectly: the salmon runs are peaking, the lingcod are aggressive, and the weather is still cooperative enough for comfortable 8-hour days on the water. Oncorhynchus TshawytschaKing salmon are the heavyweight champions of the salmon world, with thick shoulders and serious pulling power. These silver-sided beauties with black-spotted backs typically run 15-25 pounds around Bodega Bay, but we see 30+ pounders that'll test your arms. They cruise the deeper waters offshore, following baitfish and staying in the cooler currents. Fall is prime time as they stage before their spawning runs - that's when they're fat, strong, and feeding aggressively. The fight is legendary with long runs and head shakes, plus the rich, orange meat is unbeatable on the table. Local trick: they're light-sensitive, so we fish deeper during bright days. Early morning bite is often best when they move up to feed on anchovies near the surface.
Ophiodon ElongatusDespite their name, lingcod aren't actually cod but aggressive greenlings with wicked teeth and a gnarly appearance. These ambush predators hang out in rocky areas 30-300 feet deep, using their mottled coloring to blend in perfectly. Females grow much larger than males, often exceeding two feet, while the biggest can hit 60+ inches. They're lazy fighters that prefer to battle rather than run, making them surprisingly easy to land once hooked. The meat is excellent eating with firm white flesh. Our fall season is prime time when they're feeding heavily before winter. Pro tip: drop your jig right to the bottom and work it slow - they'll grab almost anything that moves near their rocky lairs, but patience pays off.
