3/4 Nearshore Family Combo Fishing Charter
Looking for a fishing trip that works for everyone in the family? This 3/4 day nearshore charter with SWF Charters gives you the best of both worlds – quality fishing action within 5 miles of shore plus the option to mix in some family fun time exploring the ICW. Whether you've got experienced anglers wanting to stay on the bite all day or a mixed crew that wants to fish hard then cool off with some island hopping, this trip adapts to what your group wants. With space for up to 6 guests, it's perfect for families, friend groups, or anyone wanting a more relaxed approach to nearshore fishing without sacrificing the chance at some solid catches.
What to Expect on the Water
This charter runs as a true choose-your-own-adventure setup. You can book it as a straight fishing trip and spend the entire time working the nearshore waters for bluefish and Spanish mackerel, or go with the combo approach where we fish for a few hours then head into the Intracoastal Waterway for swimming, shelling, and sightseeing around the local islands. The key is letting us know your preference when you book – that way we can plan the right spots and bring the appropriate gear for your group's goals. The nearshore fishing happens within that sweet 5-mile zone where you get good action without the long run offshore, making it ideal for families with younger kids or anyone prone to seasickness. When we switch to the island hopping portion, we're talking about calm ICW waters perfect for swimming and exploring some of the barrier islands that most tourists never get to see.
Gear Setup & Fishing Style
For the fishing portion, we're set up for light tackle nearshore action that's perfect for all skill levels. We'll be running a mix of trolling and drift fishing depending on what the fish are doing that day. The trolling setup uses spoons, small plugs, and sometimes live bait to cover water and locate schools of Spanish mackerel and blues. When we find them, we'll often switch to casting or drift fishing to really get into the action. All rods, reels, tackle, and bait are provided, though experienced anglers are welcome to bring their own gear if they prefer. The beauty of nearshore fishing is that the fish fight hard but the gear isn't so heavy that kids can't handle it. Spanish mackerel on light tackle will give you a great account of themselves, and when the blues are feeding aggressively, the action can be fast enough to keep everyone busy. If you opt for the combo trip, we carry all the extras for the island portion – coolers for drinks, towels, and basic snorkeling gear if you want to check out what's below the surface in the clearer ICW spots.
Top Catches This Season
The Spanish mackerel fishing has been the real standout this year. These fish typically run from late spring through early fall in our nearshore waters, and they've been showing up in good numbers within that 5-mile zone we fish. Spanish mackerel are absolute rockets when they hit – they'll make multiple runs and jump several times during the fight. Most of what we're seeing run between 1-3 pounds, which is perfect table fare size. They're also one of the best fish for getting kids excited about fishing because they hit hard, fight well, and don't require perfect technique to catch. The bluefish have been more seasonal but when they move through, they make up for it with sheer numbers and aggression. Blues will hit just about anything you put in front of them when they're feeding, and they fight with a lot of power for their size. We typically see them in the 2-5 pound range, with occasional larger fish mixed in. Both species are excellent eating when handled properly, and we'll clean your catch at the end of the trip so you can take home some fresh fillets.
Why Anglers Keep Coming Back
The flexibility of this trip is what really sets it apart. Hardcore fishing families can book it and fish the entire time, while groups with mixed interests can get their fishing fix then switch to family fun mode. The nearshore zone we fish is incredibly productive but also protected enough that we're not dealing with big seas that can make the day miserable for less experienced boaters. Parents love that their kids can actually catch fish consistently rather than sitting through hours of slow action, and the option to cool off and explore islands keeps everyone happy when the fish aren't cooperating. The crew knows these waters inside and out, so whether we're putting you on fish or showing you the best spots to find shells and swim, you're getting local knowledge that most visitors never access. It's also worth noting that this trip length gives you enough time to really experience both the fishing and family activities without feeling rushed through either one.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Spanish mackerel are the bread and butter of this fishery and one of the most fun fish you'll encounter in nearshore waters. These sleek, fast-moving members of the tuna family typically show up when water temperatures climb into the 70s and stick around through the fall. They school heavily and feed aggressively, often creating surface commotion that's visible from a distance. Spanish mackerel have razor-sharp teeth and incredible speed, making runs that will test your drag and often jumping multiple times during the fight. They're also one of the best eating fish in our waters when prepared fresh – the meat is firm, flaky, and has a mild flavor that even non-fish eaters usually enjoy. Most Spanish mackerel we catch range from 14-20 inches, with fish over 3 pounds considered solid catches that will give you a real workout on appropriate tackle.
Bluefish bring a completely different energy to the trip with their aggressive feeding behavior and powerful fights. These voracious predators travel in schools and when they're feeding, they'll attack anything that moves. Blues are known for their incredible bite strength and tenacity – they'll often hit a lure multiple times even after being hooked. They're also one of the
