Port O Connor Flats Fishing Adventure
There's something special about working the shallow flats around Port O Connor that keeps anglers coming back season after season. When you step aboard with Tightlines Guide Service, you're not just booking another fishing trip—you're tapping into some of the best inshore action the Texas coast has to offer. Our 5-hour charters give you plenty of time to dial in on the fish without feeling rushed, and with only 4 guests max, you'll get the personalized attention that makes all the difference between a good day and a great one.
What to Expect on the Water
We fish the productive shallow waters where redfish, trout, and drum love to cruise and feed. The beauty of flats fishing here is the variety—one minute you might be sight-casting to a school of reds tailing in two feet of water, the next you could be working a grass line for hungry trout. We run light-action spinning gear that's perfect for these conditions, giving you that direct connection to the fish without overpowering them. The tackle setup lets you feel every bump, every pickup, and every head shake as these fish try to make their escape. We'll have both live and dead baits rigged and ready, switching between them based on what the fish are telling us they want. Some days they're aggressive and will slam anything that moves, other days you need to finesse them with the right presentation.
Techniques & Tackle Breakdown
Light-action spinning gear is the name of the game on our flats trips, and there's good reason for that. These rods have enough backbone to handle a bull red but enough sensitivity to detect the subtle pickup of a sheepshead nibbling your bait. We'll rig you up with everything from live shrimp under popping corks to cut mullet on the bottom, depending on conditions and what species we're targeting. The shallow flats around Port O Connor are perfect for this style of fishing—you can see the fish working, watch your bait, and react quickly when things happen. We'll teach you how to read the water, spot nervous baitfish, and recognize the signs that predators are in the area. Don't worry about bringing tackle; we've got you covered with quality gear that's designed for these conditions. Just remember to ask about bait prices when you book so there are no surprises.
Customer Stories
"We recently enjoyed a half-day fishing trip in Port O'Connor during the beautiful Texas winter, and it was an unforgettable experience! I was thrilled to catch a giant redfish that measured an impressive 40 inches—my personal best! Our guide, Jon, was incredibly patient and knowledgeable, making the whole outing even more enjoyable. The serenity of the ocean was a welcome change for us; as Wyoming natives (with three of us now calling Texas home), we truly appreciated the chance to experience ocean fishing. I wholeheartedly recommend this adventure to anyone looking for a peaceful and rewarding day on the water. 10/10!" - Christa Hollister

Species You'll Want to Hook
Redfish are the crown jewel of Texas flats fishing, and Port O Connor serves up some of the best red fishing on the coast. These copper-colored bruisers range from slot-sized fish around 20-27 inches up to bull reds that can stretch past 40 inches like Christa's personal best. Reds are year-round residents here, but fall and winter often produce the biggest fish as they fatten up and get aggressive. What makes them so special is their fight—they'll make powerful runs, shake their heads like crazy, and use every bit of structure they can find to try and break you off. You'll find them cruising the shallow flats, busting bait in the open water, and tailing in the skinny stuff where you can sight-cast to them.
Sea trout are the bread and butter of our inshore fishery, and these speckled beauties are a blast on light tackle. They typically run 14-20 inches, with trophy fish pushing 24 inches or better. Trout are structure-oriented fish that love grass beds, shell reefs, and drop-offs where they can ambush baitfish. Spring and fall are peak times, but you can catch them year-round if you know where to look. They're aggressive feeders that will hit both live and artificial baits, and their initial run combined with their tendency to jump makes them a favorite among anglers of all skill levels.
Black drum are the bulldozers of the flats, and when you hook a big one, you'll know it immediately. These fish can grow massive—40, 50, even 60 pounds—and they'll test your tackle and your patience. Drum are bottom feeders that love crabs and cut bait, and they're most active during the cooler months. What's exciting about drum fishing is the anticipation; they'll often pick up your bait and move off slowly, so you need to be patient and let them take it before setting the hook. Once you do, get ready for a bulldogging fight that's all power and determination.
Sheepshead are the technical challenge of our target species, earning their nickname as the "convict fish" both for their black and white stripes and their tendency to "steal" your bait. These fish have human-like teeth designed for crushing shellfish, so they require a different approach than the other species. They're structure-oriented fish that hang around pilings, reefs, and jetties, and catching them consistently requires skill and patience. What makes them worth targeting is their excellent table fare—sheepshead are some of the best eating fish in the bay, with firm, white meat that's hard to beat.
