Port O Connor Flats Fishing Adventure
Looking for some real Texas coastal action? Our 5-hour flats fishing charter out of Port O Connor puts you right in the heart of some of the best shallow water fishing on the Gulf Coast. We're talking about crystal-clear flats where you can sight-fish redfish cruising the grass beds, chase monster black drum in the shallows, and work the structure for fat sea trout and sheepshead. This isn't your typical deep-sea grind – it's technical, visual fishing that'll test your skills and reward you with some of the most satisfying catches you'll ever make. With space for up to 4 anglers, you'll have plenty of room to work without bumping elbows, and our local knowledge puts you on fish that other boats just drive right past.
What to Expect on the Water
We'll launch early from Port O Connor and head straight to the productive flats that make this area famous among serious anglers. The shallow water here ranges from 6 inches to about 4 feet deep, giving us access to feeding zones that bigger boats can't reach. You'll spend your day sight-casting to tailing redfish, working oyster bars for black drum, and picking apart grass lines where sea trout ambush baitfish. The scenery changes constantly as we move between different flats – one minute you're fishing crystal-clear sand bottoms, the next you're working murky water around shell reefs. It's visual fishing at its finest, where reading the water and making accurate casts separates the pros from the weekend warriors. Don't worry about bringing lunch – we keep things simple so you can focus on fishing, but make sure to pack plenty of water and snacks to keep your energy up during our 5-hour adventure.
Light Tackle & Live Bait Setup
We fish exclusively with light-action spinning gear that gives you maximum sensitivity and fighting fun on these flats species. Think 2500-3000 size reels spooled with 15-20 pound braid, paired with 7-foot medium-light rods that have the backbone to handle big fish but won't overpower smaller sea trout. Our go-to setup uses a 20-pound fluorocarbon leader – invisible to spooky flats fish but strong enough for structure fishing around oyster bars. We run both live and fresh dead baits depending on conditions and target species. Live shrimp under popping corks work magic on sea trout, while fresh cut mullet on Carolina rigs is deadly for black drum and big redfish. When the bite gets tough, we'll switch to soft plastics on 1/8-ounce jigheads – the light presentation drives fish crazy in shallow water. Make sure to ask about bait prices when you book since live bait availability and costs can vary with seasons and weather.

"We recently enjoyed a half-day fishing trip in Port O'Connor during the beautiful Texas winter, and it was an unforgettable experience! I was thrilled to catch a giant redfish that measured an impressive 40 inches—my personal best! Our guide, Jon, was incredibly patient and knowledgeable, making the whole outing even more enjoyable. Species You'll Want to Hook
Redfish are the crown jewel of Port O Connor flats fishing, and for good reason. These copper-colored bulldogs range from slot-size fish around 20-25 inches up to monster bull reds pushing 40+ inches like Christa landed. Peak season runs from March through November, but winter fishing can be phenomenal when cold fronts push baitfish into shallow water. Redfish feed aggressively in 1-3 feet of water, often with their backs and tails showing as they root around oyster bars and grass beds. The visual aspect makes them addictive – watching a big red cruise up to your bait and inhale it never gets old. Their initial runs are legendary, often peeling 50+ yards of drag before you can slow them down.
Black drum might not win beauty contests, but they'll test your tackle and technique like no other flats species. These bottom-huggers range from 5-pound "puppy drum" up to 30+ pound giants that look more like submarines than fish. Spring and fall offer the best action when big drum move into shallow water to spawn and feed. They're structure-oriented fish, hanging around oyster reefs, dock pilings, and shell bars where they use their powerful jaws to crush crabs and shellfish. When you hook a big black drum in shallow water, expect a bulldogging fight with powerful runs toward the nearest structure. Their drumming sound – created by specialized muscles vibrating their swim bladder – often gives away their location before you see them.
Sea trout provide consistent action throughout our 5-hour trips, especially during spring and fall when they school up in grass beds and along drop-offs. These spotted beauties range from 12-inch "throwbacks" up to wall-hanger "gator trout" exceeding 25 inches. They're aggressive feeders that respond well to both live shrimp and artificial lures, making them perfect for anglers of all skill levels. Sea trout have soft mouths that require a delicate touch – too much pressure and they'll throw the hook, but their acrobatic jumps and strong runs make every fish a memorable catch. Look for them around grass lines, oyster bars, and channel edges where they ambush passing baitfish.
Sheepshead earn their reputation as the "convict fish" with distinctive black
