We'll start the morning by running out to proven fish-holding structure where the bottom fishing can be red hot. These brown, shark-looking fish cruise around wrecks, reefs, and buoys in 30-70 feet, though we sometimes find them deeper on offshore rigs. Spring migration and summer months are prime time when they're easiest to spot near the surface. What makes cobia special is their excellent table fare - firm, white meat that rivals grouper. They're also sight-fishing targets, which adds excitement when you can see them coming. My go-to technique is a 4-6 oz bucktail jig in any color, worked around structure. Don't worry about jig color - they'll eat anything when they're hungry.
Scomberomorus CavallaKing Mackerel are fast, aggressive fighters that typically run 20-40 pounds, though some push 60+ pounds. You'll find them around our artificial reefs and wrecks in 40-150 feet of water, especially during warmer months when water temps hit 68-84°F. These speed demons love to hit trolled baits and put up serious fights, making long runs that'll test your drag. They're also excellent table fare with firm, flaky meat. When targeting kings, I always rig with a wire leader and double-hook setup - put one hook through the bait's nose and let a second treble dangle behind it. Kings love to bite the back half of live baits, so that trailing hook is your insurance policy.
Lutjanus SynagrisLane Snappers are smaller cousins to red snapper, usually running 10-14 inches and 1-3 pounds with those distinctive pink bodies and yellow racing stripes. They hang around the same reefs and wrecks as reds but often in shallower water, 30-100 feet. These guys are aggressive and less spooky than other snappers, making them great action fish when the bite is slow. While smaller, they're still good eating with sweet, flaky meat. Best part is they bite year-round, though spring through fall gives you the most consistent action. I always keep light tackle ready for lanes - they'll hit cut shrimp, small pieces of squid, or even tiny jigs. Fish at night if you really want to load up on them.
Lutjanus CampechanusRed Snapper are the prize of our reef fishing, typically running 2-5 pounds with occasional 10+ pound trophies. These bright red beauties live on hard bottom, wrecks, and artificial reefs in 40-200 feet of water. Summer months during their season are prime time, especially when we're working deeper structures. Snappers are tough fighters that dive straight for cover when hooked, and they're hands-down some of the best eating fish in the Gulf. Their mild, sweet meat makes every cooler. The key to landing big snappers is getting fresh bait to the bottom fast. I like to use a heavy sinker with circle hooks and fresh cut squid or cigar minnows. Keep tension on them - they'll wrap you up in structure if you give them slack.
Scomberomorus MaculatusSpanish Mackerel are fast-moving schooling fish that typically run 1-3 pounds and 14-20 inches, perfect for light tackle action. You'll find them around structure in 20-60 feet, often near the surface chasing bait schools. They show up consistently spring through fall when water temps warm up. These silver speedsters with yellow spots are a blast on light gear and make excellent table fare - mild, flaky meat that's perfect grilled or smoked. When we locate a school, it's non-stop action until they move on. Small spoons and jigs work great, but my favorite trick is a #1 hook with a small piece of cut bait on a light jig head. Keep moving - once the school passes, you need to find the next one.
