Fishing during winter is a unique experience on its own. Whether it’s being surrounded by nature’s best views carpeted by snow or experiencing ice fishing for the very first time, it truly is the most wonderful time of the year. Yet, winter isn’t for everyone, especially when considering the cold, logistical issues, and of course, the lack of fish activity.

Preparing for the cold is one of the essential things anglers should do when going out for winter fishing because, more than being an annoyance, the cold can be dangerous.  Of course, in terms of buying equipment, there are many things like thick clothes, shovels, heating equipment, and other winter-specific gear that are needed during this time.  Anglers simply not wanting to spend hours in the cold is also just as good a reason. The great thing about fishing in the United States is how big the country is. There are many lakes, rivers, and ditches surrounded by two oceans, namely the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. There's a wide selection of fish to catch and different climates, temperatures, weather conditions, and even ecosystems. From fishing trout in the Hudson River to catching alligator gar in Louisiana’s bayous, there’s a little something for everyone.

For those looking to escape the cold or fish in temperatures, anglers are more accustomed to these are some of the places worth checking out.

Fishing Destinations for Those Looking to Escape the Cold

1. Florida

The country's diversity comes into its full effect when looking at Florida. The state is unlike any other with its tropical island-like weather, whereas Miami is known for its beautiful beaches and active nightlife. The city prides itself as both a cultural and tourism center of the state and is host to many festivals, art shows, and sporting events.

As great as Miami is, the entirety of Florida in itself is one of the most exotic fishing spots in the country. With a vast number of backwater bayous, rivers, and lakes and being adjacent to both the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico, there is much fish to catch. What makes Florida unique to most Winter destinations is its climate.  Because of its proximity to the equator, its environment is similar to many tropical destinations. This is why many foreign species of fish found in South America are located in Florida. Other than the species’ origins, much exotic fish that thrive in the state can only be found there—those looking to fish without the extra steps when ice fishing should consider fishing here.

2. Texas

Though not as warm as Florida can be during winter, Texas is still one of the best fishing spots in America that aren’t as affected by the colder climate. Located at the southern tip of the state, South Padre Island is home to many resorts and both yachting and sportfishing charters. Their anglers will have a chance to catch various fish like red drum, trout, and flounder. Further north from South Padre Island is Corpus Christi Bay, another fishing hotspot where red and black drum are commonly found.

Taking the family on a camping trip is also a great option as it’s not too cold, nor is it as humid in Texas as it is in Florida. There are a lot of open spaces and national parks suited to camping with the family. The Guadalupe River is a popular tourist destination. It is one of the best places in the world for trout fishing, especially in the winter. Rainbow trout are regularly stocked in the river. Other than fishing, campers are also allowed to use non-motorized watercraft like kayaks and paddleboards. This place is a go-to for anglers with families. It can accommodate other activities for the kids and be a great fishing site. Finally, it is also an excellent place to introduce kids to fishing as there is plenty of fish to go around.

3. San Diego

California is a prominent place. Heading up to the north will get you up to popular holiday vacation spots such as Lake Tahoe, where Christmas is in full bloom. Yet on the southern end of the state lies San Diego, an area adjacent to the Pacific Ocean, near both Mexico and the equator, where the climate is comparatively warm throughout the year. Home to one of the largest fleets of recreational and sports fishing charters on the west coast, San Diego is a suitable place to fish all year round, with fish like yellowtail, rockfish, and sand bass available to catch.

There are also many things to do in the area during winter. Getting a fishing charter and exploring the Pacific is a part of the bucket list for many anglers. If not in the Pacific, many charters explore other places like Mission and San Diego bay. The area is also well-known for its freshwater fishing, with some of the largest largemouth bass caught in its waters. Fishing tournaments are also held even during the winter months.

For those looking for other things to do besides fishing, San Diego offers a lot of attractions for visitors during this time of year. From whale watching to ice skating by the sea and everything in between. Families looking to escape the winter cold while still keeping in line with the Christmas spirit.

4. Louisiana

Another area best for beating the cold is Louisiana and for those looking to fish, more specifically, in its bayous. The bayous are part of the Mississippi River Delta, one of the largest freshwater sources in the West. It’s known for its diverse ecosystem of flora and fauna, clearly reflected in its world-famous cajun cuisine. Catfish and bass (largemouth and smallmouth) can be found during this time though maybe not as active or in abundance. Otherwise, Louisiana is a great place to spend time with family during the holidays. Visit as the city is rife with Christmas lights and decor befitting the season and activities like ice skating on the Baton Rouge River and the Natchitoches Christmas Festival.

5. North Carolina

Winter is one of the best times for trout fishing. Trout prefers cold, running water with lots of oxygen, many found in North Carolina. When talking about saltwater fishing, the Pamlico sound comes to mind. All year long, anglers will find healthy populations of redfish, tarpon, spanish mackerel, and many more. When fishing in winter, striped bass, king mackerel, and black drum can also be found.

Other than fishing, the state offers a lot of activities for each family member. Whether go-karting or going to a museum, North Carolina has got it all. It’s also good to know that since the state has mountainous regions, there will be some snowy areas, especially in the northern regions. The southern areas, however, aren’t as affected.

The Christmas season isn’t just about winter wonderlands, gingerbread houses, and the cold. There are loads of places, both cold and otherwise, to take family trips and enjoy a day of fishing. In the end, what’s most important is spending time with family.
