This location held the renowned French Fort La Balize, built as early as 1699. Today, the parish is the site of several oil refineries, thanks to the nearby shipping lanes used to move their products. This parish was first in the United States where shippers utilized containers for cargo in foreign trade.

The fort’s strong defenses allowed to hold strong against enemy naval bombardments, it lasted long enough to see the defeat of the British Army near New Orleans.
