It’s measured to be approximately 7.2 miles away from the town of Laurel and has an elevation of 4 meters. It is part of the stream also named Cow Pen Slough which was about 13.7 miles long. You can find a nearby town named Lake Sarasota found 8.4 miles northwest. Further to the west of the canal are two other towns named Vamo and Osprey, both are about 6 miles away from it. 

The stream that the canal is part of flows through several townships and landmarks. One of the towns nearest to the canal is Gulf Gate Estates, a census-designated place that is widely considered to be one of the best places to live in all of Florida. Its popularity comes from the “urban-suburban mix feel” found in the area. You are free to enter the various restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and even bait shops if you choose to visit. 

Some of the waters flowing through the canal come from a town called Lake Sarasota, which also happens to contain a 25-acre private lake with the same name. Locals have also noted that two other species have been caught but not as consistent as the first two. You can also find bluegill and even redbreast tilapia.
