About The D P Canal

About D P Canal, LA

DP Canal is a bay located in Louisiana about 5 miles from a town named Belle Chasse. It’s found within the Plaquemines Parish and is 5 miles away from another town called Poydras. The bay has an elevation of 1 meter and is found close by a few water bodies. The closest one is the Delacroix Canal, which the bay is connected to. The other canals nearby the bay include Promised Land Canal, Reggio Canal, and the Manuel Canal. The bay is also next to a famous land formation in the area called Tiger’s Ridge.

The town nearest to the bay is Belle Chasse, it’s found on the west of the Mississippi River and is considered a part of the Great New Orleans metropolitan area. The place is considered the largest community in Plaquemines Parish, and it also contains the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans, an important U.S Naval Air Station.

There are several sources for the origin of the town’s name. Some say it comes from the French word meaning ‘Beautiful Hunting’, while others say it was named after New Orleans colonel Joseph D. Bellechasse.

Another well-known landmark town named Poydras is also found close by DP Canal. It’s found east of the Mississippi River and is part of the New Orleans–Metairie–Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first established by the native Isleños in the early 18th century during the time when the state of Louisiana was a Spanish colony. It’s said that it was named after the famous American philanthropist Julien de Lallande Poydras.

D P Canal Seasonal & Other Description

Fishing Seasonality

The bay’s population is healthy and active, so you can feasibly fish in the area during any season and still be able to get a good catch from the fish species of your choice. But there is a season where you can be the more effective. The best time to fish here is during the spring on the days between March 20 to June 20. Fish in the area will spawn in shallower waters during this season, making them more exposed and vulnerable to your bait. Beginning your trip during these days will increase your chances of getting a great catch.

There aren’t heavy restrictions in the bay, so you can fish at any time of day. But there is a time where it’s best to fish. The report shows that the fish are more active during the early morning, from 6:00 AM to around 8:00 AM. You can also fish at another time just as effective, this is from 5:00 PM to around 7:00 PM.
