Deep Sea Fishing Adventure Off Dauphin Island
Captain T's Offshore Fishing Charter takes you 55 miles out into the Gulf of Mexico for a full-day deep sea fishing adventure that serious anglers dream about. This isn't your typical bay fishing trip – we're talking about heading to structure in 100-250 feet of water where the big boys live. You'll spend 8 solid hours on the water targeting premium species like grouper, red snapper, amberjack, and when conditions are right, we'll fire up the trolling spread for pelagics like mahi, king mackerel, and wahoo. The boat holds up to 6 anglers, making it perfect for a group of fishing buddies or a family that wants to experience what world-class Gulf fishing is all about.
What to Expect on the Water
Your day starts early with a run out to proven fishing grounds where Captain T has been putting clients on fish for years. We're not just running to the closest numbers on the GPS – this is a committed offshore trip to where the water turns that deep blue and the fish get serious. The first part of your day focuses on bottom fishing over structure, artificial reefs, and natural hard bottom where grouper and snapper set up shop. You'll be dropping heavy tackle with circle hooks and fresh bait down to depths that require some muscle to work. Between bottom fishing spots, depending on what's biting and what you're up for, we can deploy the trolling spread to cover water and hunt for those fast-moving pelagics that make your drag scream. The captain reads conditions, watches the fish finder, and adjusts the game plan throughout the day to put you on the best bite possible.
Tackle and Techniques
All your gear is covered – we're talking quality rods and reels spooled with the right line for deep water fishing. For bottom fishing, you'll be using conventional tackle with enough backbone to horse a big grouper up from 200 feet, plus the drag system to handle those initial amberjack runs. Circle hooks are the name of the game for most bottom species, and we supply fresh bait that these fish can't resist. When we switch to trolling, the boat gets rigged with a proper spread – ballyhoo, spoons, diving plugs, and whatever else is working that week. The captain handles boat positioning and trolling speeds while you focus on fighting fish. Ice is provided to keep your catch fresh, but make sure to bring a good cooler for the ride home because these offshore trips can fill boxes fast when the bite is on.

Species You'll Want to Hook
Mahi Mahi are the rainbow-colored speedsters that make offshore fishing legendary. These fish show up around floating debris, weed lines, or just about anywhere in blue water, especially during warmer months from spring through fall. When you hook into a school of dolphin, the action can be non-stop with fish ranging from small schoolies to bull dolphins pushing 40 pounds. They fight hard, jump like crazy, and put some of the best-tasting fillets in your cooler. The key to mahi success is covering water with trolling gear and being ready when you mark fish or spot floating structure.
Yellowtail Amberjack are the bruisers of the reef system, and these fish will test your arms and your tackle. AJs live around structure in depths from 80 feet out to the deep water, and they grow big in Gulf waters – fish over 50 pounds are common targets. When you hook an amberjack, expect a freight train run straight for the bottom followed by a grinding fight that can last 20 minutes. They're year-round residents but fish best during cooler months when they're more aggressive. The meat is excellent when bled and iced properly, and landing a big yellowtail is a badge of honor for any offshore angler.
Yellowfin Tuna represent the ultimate offshore prize in these waters. These fish require specific conditions – blue water, bait schools, and often a bit of luck – but when they show up, it's game time. Yellowfins in the Gulf can range from 20-pound schoolies to 100+ pound giants that will take you into your backing in seconds. Summer and fall typically offer the best yellowfin opportunities, especially when offshore conditions align with bait movements. These fish demand heavy tackle and strong backs, but the sashimi-grade meat and bragging rights make every minute of the fight worthwhile.
Red Snapper are the bread and butter of Gulf bottom fishing, and the waters off Dauphin Island hold some true giants. During open season, typically summer months, these fish stack up over artificial reefs and hard bottom in 60-200 feet of water. A good day on the snapper grounds can mean limits of fish ranging from 5 to 20+ pounds, with occasional monsters that make you question your tackle. Reds are smart fish that require fresh bait and patience, but they're also one of the most reliable targets when you find the right structure.
Goliath Grouper are the gentle giants of the reef system and the fish that make grown anglers feel like kids again. These massive grouper, which can exceed 300 pounds, are catch-and-release only but provide some of the most memorable fishing experiences in the Gulf. When you hook a goliath, there's no question about what's on the other end – they use their size and the structure to their advantage, often requiring heavy tackle and team effort to get them boatside for photos. Summer months offer the best goliath action, and seeing one of these prehistoric-looking fish next to the boat is something you'll never forget.
