Deep-Sea Fishing San Juan: Trophy Hunting Offshore
Picture yourself 20 miles off the coast of San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the continental shelf drops into some of the most productive blue water in the Caribbean. That's where you'll spend your day chasing pelagic gamefish that'll test your tackle and your nerve. Our 4 to 8-hour charters put you right in the strike zone where the big boys swim – we're talking Blue Marlin pushing 500 pounds, screaming Wahoo, and acrobatic Sailfish that'll jump until your arms ache from fighting them. With our top-rated crew and world-class equipment, you're not just going fishing – you're hunting trophies in waters that have made legends out of weekend anglers.
What to Expect on the Water
We'll pick you up bright and early from San Juan's marina, usually around sunrise when the water's still got that glassy morning calm. The ride out takes about 45 minutes, giving you time to get your sea legs and watch our crew rig the spread. Once we hit the blue water where the depth finder shows 1,000 feet or more, that's when the magic happens. You'll see the water change from that Caribbean green to deep indigo blue – billfish country. We run a full spread of trolling lures, usually 4 to 6 lines depending on conditions, with everything from small feathers for Mahi to massive marlin lures that look like they could catch a small shark. The boat's equipped with fighting chairs, outriggers, and all the heavy tackle you need to battle fish that can run 400 yards of line in their first screaming run. Our captains have been working these waters for decades, reading the current breaks, temperature changes, and bird activity that signal where the fish are feeding.
Trolling Tactics & Blue Water
We fish the deep blue using classic offshore trolling techniques that have been proven in these waters for generations. The spread typically includes a mix of natural baits like ballyhoo and artificial lures – big cedar plugs, diving plugs, and those deadly feather jigs that Mahi just can't resist. We'll adjust our trolling speed based on what we're targeting – slower for marlin around 6-7 knots, faster for Wahoo when we want those lures screaming through the water at 12 knots. The outriggers keep the lines spread wide, and we'll work the edges of the current where baitfish get pushed up and the big predators come to feed. When the rod tip starts dancing or that reel starts screaming, you'd better be ready because these fish don't mess around. We use 50 to 80-pound test tackle with circle hooks for billfish conservation, and our experienced mates will coach you through every step of the fight, from setting the hook to working the fish to the boat.
Top Catches This Season
The Atlantic Sailfish around San Juan are absolute acrobats – these fish average 40 to 60 pounds and will jump repeatedly once hooked, shaking their heads and throwing spray everywhere while you're trying to keep tension on the line. Peak season runs from December through April when they're thick along the continental shelf. What makes them special here is the clear water – you can actually see them lit up and feeding on the surface, their sails flared like purple and blue flags. Blue Marlin are the holy grail of offshore fishing in Puerto Rico, with fish ranging from 200 to over 800 pounds. Summer months from June to September are prime time, when these giants move through following the bait. The White Marlin are smaller but no less challenging, typically running 50 to 100 pounds and known for their incredible jumping ability – they're like sailfish on steroids. Mahi Mahi, or dorado as the locals call them, are customer favorites because they're beautiful, fight hard, and taste even better. These golden bulldogs run in schools, so when you find one, there's usually more around. Wahoo are pure speed demons, capable of hitting 50 mph underwater and stripping line off your reel faster than you thought possible. They average 30 to 60 pounds here and have teeth like a barracuda, so we use wire leaders when we're specifically targeting them.
