We'll meet you at the dock before sunrise, and once we clear the inlet, it's game time. The Outer Banks sits right in the path of the Gulf Stream, which means we don't have to run forever to reach productive water. Depending on what's biting and what you're hoping to catch, we'll either set up a trolling spread or anchor up over some bottom structure. The trolling is where the real magic happens – we'll have four to six lines out, pulling a mix of ballyhoo, cedar plugs, and maybe some bigger baits if we're hunting marlin. When that outrigger goes off and line starts screaming off the reel, your heart's going to be pounding. Bottom fishing is a different kind of excitement, especially when you're dropping baits in 200+ feet of water and never know if the next bite might be a big grouper, king mackerel, or maybe even a monster amberjack. Fair warning though – this trip covers a lot of water and we'll be in some serious seas. If you get seasick easily or you're bringing young kids, this probably isn't the best choice.
We run top-notch gear that's built for these waters. Our trolling setup includes heavy-duty outriggers that can handle big baits and bigger fish. When we're pulling baits, we'll typically have a mix of different presentations – some closer to the surface for mahi and kings, others running deeper for tuna. The bottom fishing setup is equally serious, with electric reels available for those deep drops and heavy sinkers to get your bait down where the fish are holding. All tackle and bait is included, but if you've got lucky rods or reels you prefer to use, bring them along. We'll rig everything for the conditions and what we're targeting that day. The technique really depends on the season and what's moving through. Spring and fall, we'll focus more on the trolling spread when the big pelagics are migrating. Summer months, the bottom bite can be red hot, especially early morning and late afternoon. We'll read the water, check the temperature breaks, and put you on fish.

Scomberomorus CavallaKing Mackerel, or "Kings" as we call them, are some of the fastest fish you'll encounter off North Carolina. These silver rockets typically run 15-40 pounds, though we see monsters pushing 60+ pounds during peak season. They cruise the 40-150 foot depths along temperature breaks and structure. Spring through fall gives us the best action when water temps hit that sweet 68-84°F range. What makes Kings special is their blistering speed and razor-sharp teeth - they'll slice through regular leaders like butter. The meat's rich and flaky, perfect for the grill. Here's a local trick: rig with a stinger hook about 6 inches back from your main hook. Kings love to hit baits from behind, and that trailing hook will nail them when they circle back for seconds.
Coryphaena HippurusMahi are the acrobats of offshore fishing - brilliant golden fish that put on a light show when they hit the deck. Most run 15-30 pounds, but we catch 40+ pounders regularly during peak season. They love floating debris, weed lines, and temperature breaks in 100+ feet of blue water.
