Lake Ontario Evening Salmon & Trout Charter
There's something special about fishing Lake Ontario as the day winds down. This 6-hour evening charter combines prime fishing time with some of the most beautiful scenery you'll find on the Great Lakes. We're talking about a relaxed pace that still puts fish in the boat – perfect for families wanting to introduce kids to serious fishing, couples looking for a memorable outing, or anyone who appreciates good angling mixed with stunning sunset views. With space for up to 4 guests, you'll have plenty of room to move around and everyone gets their shot at landing salmon and trout that call these deep, cold waters home.
What to Expect on the Water
Your evening starts around 3 PM when the afternoon bite begins to pick up. Lake Ontario's deep, clear waters hold incredible populations of salmon and trout, and evening hours are when these fish really start to move. We'll head out to proven fishing grounds where thermal layers create the perfect conditions for holding fish. The atmosphere is laid-back but focused – think quality time on the water without the pressure of a tournament setting. As we fish, you'll watch the shoreline change colors with the setting sun, creating that perfect backdrop for photos and memories. The trip runs until around 9 PM, giving us plenty of time to work different depths and adjust our approach based on what the fish are telling us. All quality rods, reels, and tackle are included, so you can focus on enjoying the experience rather than worrying about gear.
Trolling Tactics & Gear Setup
Lake Ontario fishing means trolling, and we do it right. We'll be running downriggers and dipsy divers to get our lures down to where the fish are holding – typically anywhere from 40 to 120 feet deep depending on the season and water temperature. The boat is equipped with quality Penn and Shimano reels paired with medium-heavy rods that can handle the hard runs these Great Lakes fish are famous for. We'll use a mix of spoons, plugs, and flasher-fly combinations, adjusting colors and presentations based on water clarity and what's been producing. The beauty of evening fishing is that we can cover a lot of water as fish start their feeding movements, and the cooler air temperatures make for comfortable fishing conditions. You'll learn how to read the fishfinder, understand why we're fishing certain depths, and get hands-on experience with proper trolling techniques that you can use on future trips.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Chinook Salmon are the kings of Lake Ontario, and for good reason. These powerful fish can exceed 30 pounds and provide some of the most exciting fishing you'll find anywhere. Spring through fall, they roam the lake in search of baitfish, with evening hours being prime time for feeding activity. When a king hits your line, you'll know it immediately – they make blistering runs and aerial displays that get everyone on the boat excited. The fight can last 15-20 minutes, testing both your endurance and the drag system on the reel.
Rainbow Trout, or "bows" as we call them, are absolute acrobats. These fish jump repeatedly when hooked, often clearing the water by several feet in spectacular displays. Lake Ontario rainbows average 8-12 pounds but can reach 15 pounds or more. They're most active during spring and fall, and evening trolling often produces the best action. What makes rainbows special is their unpredictability – they might run deep, come to the surface, or zigzag back toward the boat. Each fish fights differently, keeping you guessing until it's in the net.
Brown Trout are the wariest of our target species, but that's what makes them so satisfying to catch. These golden-colored fighters prefer deeper, cooler water and are most active during low-light conditions, making our evening trips ideal for targeting them. Browns can reach 20 pounds in Lake Ontario, though most range from 6-14 pounds. They're known for their powerful, determined runs and their tendency to head straight for the bottom when hooked. Many anglers consider browns the best eating fish in the lake, with firm, flavorful meat that's excellent prepared any way you like it.
Lake Trout round out our target list and represent the true natives of these waters. These deep-water specialists can live for decades and reach impressive sizes – 15-20 pounders are common, with some exceeding 25 pounds. Lakers prefer the deepest, coldest water we fish, often holding 100+ feet down. They're incredibly strong fighters that use their weight and the water column to their advantage, making long, steady runs that test your arms and the rod. Spring and fall offer the best lake trout action when they move into shallower water to feed, making them more accessible to our trolling presentations.
