Lake Michigan Fishing Trip (AM)
Nothing beats the feeling of your rod bending under the weight of a monster salmon in the early morning light on Lake Michigan. Our AM fishing charter puts you right in the action when the fish are most active, and trust me – these waters hold some of the best fishing in the Great Lakes. You'll be targeting trophy-sized trout and salmon that'll have you talking about this trip for years. We keep our groups small at just 4 anglers max, so you get plenty of personalized attention and room to work your lines without getting tangled up with other folks.
What to Expect on the Water
We'll have you on the water bright and early when the fish are feeding most aggressively. Lake Michigan's morning bite is legendary among local anglers, and there's a reason we book these AM slots first every season. The lake's typically calmer in the morning hours, making for a more comfortable ride and better fishing conditions overall. You'll be working depths anywhere from 40 to 150 feet depending on where the fish are holding that day – we use our fish finder and years of local knowledge to put you on the hot spots. The scenery alone is worth the trip, with the Chicago skyline in the distance and miles of open water stretching to the horizon. Don't worry about bringing gear – we've got all the rods, reels, tackle, and nets you'll need. Just grab your valid fishing license, pack some snacks and drinks, and get ready for some serious fishing action.
Trolling Tactics & Gear Setup
We run a trolling operation here, which is hands-down the most effective way to cover water and locate active fish on a body of water this size. Our boat's rigged with downriggers and planer boards that let us spread multiple lines at different depths and distances from the boat. You'll be working with quality spinning and conventional tackle matched to the species we're targeting that day. We typically run spoons, plugs, and cut bait rigs depending on what the fish are hitting. The downriggers are key – they get your lures down to where the fish are suspended in the water column, usually following the thermocline where the water temperature drops. Don't worry if you've never used downriggers before; we'll walk you through everything step by step. Part of the fun is learning how to read the electronics and adjust your presentation based on what we're seeing on the fish finder.
Top Catches This Season
Rainbow Trout are absolutely crushing it this year and fight like fish twice their size. These chrome-bright beauties average 3-8 pounds but can push into double digits if you're lucky. They're most active in the cooler morning waters and love to hit silver spoons and small plugs. What makes rainbows so exciting is their acrobatic fight – they'll jump, run, and do everything they can to throw your hook. Spring through early summer is prime time, when they're feeding heavily in the upper water column.
Coho Salmon are another customer favorite and for good reason – these fish are pure adrenaline. Running anywhere from 5-12 pounds, cohos are known for their blistering runs and aerial displays when hooked. They prefer the 45-80 foot depth range during morning hours and can't resist a well-presented cut bait or flashy spoon. Late summer into fall is when they really turn on as they start their spawning run, making them more aggressive and easier to locate.
Chinook Salmon are the kings of Lake Michigan, and landing one is every angler's dream out here. These monsters can weigh anywhere from 10-30+ pounds and will test your tackle and your endurance. Kings tend to hold deeper than other species, often in 60-120 feet of water, and they prefer larger baits and lures. Their fight is more of a bulldogging, powerful battle rather than the flashy jumps of cohos. Peak season runs from late spring through early fall when they're feeding on alewives and other baitfish.
Brown Trout are the smartest fish in the lake and definitely the trickiest to fool, but that's what makes them so rewarding to catch. These golden-sided beauties average 4-10 pounds and are known for their wariness and strong fights. They often feed closer to shore and in slightly shallower water than other species, especially during low-light conditions. Browns can be caught year-round but really shine during the cooler months when they're more active during daylight hours.
Lake Trout are the deep-water specialists and can live for decades, growing to impressive sizes. These prehistoric-looking fish prefer the coldest, deepest water and can weigh anywhere from 8-25 pounds or more. They're not the fastest fighters, but their size and determination make for memorable battles. Lakers are most active during the cooler months and can be targeted year-round, though they require deeper presentations and heavier tackle to reach their preferred depths.
