Deep Sea Fishing San Diego | 12HRS or 22HRS Trip
San Diego's offshore waters are calling, and Ironclad Sportfishing has the perfect answer. Our deep sea fishing charters put you right where the big fish live – miles offshore in the blue water where yellowfin tuna, bluefin tuna, and dorado cruise the currents. Choose between a solid 12-hour day trip that gets you back to the dock by 7 p.m., or go all-in with our 22-hour overnight adventure to the legendary Coronado Islands. With space for up to 6 anglers, these aren't your typical harbor tours. We're talking serious fishing in some of the most productive waters off the California coast.
What to Expect on the Water
When you step aboard with Ironclad Sportfishing, you're signing up for the real deal. Our 12-hour trips launch early and keep you fishing hard until mid-afternoon, covering serious ground to find where the fish are biting. The 22-hour overnight option takes things up a notch – we'll cruise south to the Coronado Islands where Mexican waters hold some of the best fishing on the West Coast. Fair warning: you'll need your passport for the overnight trip since we cross into Mexican waters. The boat sleeps comfortably, and there's nothing quite like waking up at first light with lines already in the water. Captain and crew know these waters like the back of their hand, reading the conditions and adjusting our game plan based on what's happening out there. Some days we're trolling the kelp edges, other days we're running and gunning in open blue water.
Techniques and Tackle Setup
We fish these waters the way they're meant to be fished – with heavy tackle and proven techniques that produce results. Most of our fishing happens trolling with live bait when we can get it, or high-speed trolling with lures when the fish are scattered and moving fast. The crew will set you up with the right gear for the conditions, whether that's 30-pound outfits for smaller yellowfin or stepping up to 50-80 pound gear when the big bluefin are around. We'll work the temperature breaks, kelp paddies, and structure where fish congregate. Iron jigs, surface poppers, and live sardines or mackerel are all part of the arsenal. The overnight trips let us fish different techniques as conditions change – maybe starting with a twilight bite on poppers, then switching to slow-trolling live bait through the night, and finishing with iron work at first light. Bring your own gear if you want, but our tackle is tournament-grade and ready to handle anything that swims in these waters.
Top Catches This Season
The waters off San Diego serve up an amazing variety of sport fish, and each species brings its own challenge and reward. Mahi mahi, or dorado as the locals call them, are absolute acrobats that'll put on a show once hooked. These golden beauties typically run 10-30 pounds and are most active during the warmer months from late spring through early fall. They love floating kelp and debris, often traveling in small schools. What makes them special is their aggressive strike and the way they go completely airborne when fighting – plus they're fantastic eating. Lingcod are the bruisers of the bunch, holding tight to structure and rocky bottoms where they ambush prey. These prehistoric-looking predators can push 40-50 pounds and fight like they're twice that size. Fall and winter are prime time for lingcod, when they move into shallower water. They're not pretty, but they're pure muscle and make excellent table fare.
Yellowfin tuna are the bread and butter of San Diego offshore fishing, and for good reason. These speed demons can hit 60+ pounds and test every ounce of your tackle and technique. Summer and fall bring the best yellowfin action, when warm water pushes north and brings schools of these incredible fish with it. They're built for speed and endurance – long, smoking runs followed by deep, bulldogging fights that'll leave your arms burning. Pacific halibut are the flatfish kings, lying in wait on sandy bottoms before engulfing baits with surprising aggression. Spring through fall offers the best halibut fishing, with fish ranging from "chickens" around 10 pounds up to barn doors pushing 100+. They're masters of camouflage and incredibly strong once hooked.
Then there's bluefin tuna – the holy grail of West Coast fishing. These are the fish that legends are made of, with local bluefin commonly reaching 100-200 pounds and occasionally much larger. Peak season runs from summer into early winter, when schools move through on their migration routes. Bluefin are incredibly smart and incredibly strong, requiring precise presentations and serious tackle. When you hook one, you'd better be ready for a battle that can last hours. They're the reason anglers travel from around the world to fish San Diego waters, and landing one is a legitimate achievement that'll have you talking for years.
