Blue Water Day Trip | 8 HR Private Charter
Picture this: you're 20+ miles offshore, engines humming as we cruise toward the deep blue Atlantic where the big boys live. This isn't your typical nearshore trip – we're talking serious blue water fishing where the action happens fast and the fish fight hard. With Life Below The Surface Charters, you'll spend eight full hours targeting some of the ocean's most prized species in waters that drop thousands of feet below your boots. This private charter keeps things intimate with just three anglers max, so you'll get personalized attention and plenty of room to work when that reel starts screaming.
What to Expect on the Water
We'll be hitting the offshore highway where pelagic species cruise year-round, hunting the same baitfish we'll be imitating. Our captain knows these waters like his backyard – every hump, ledge, wreck, and FAD that holds fish. The boat's rigged with top-shelf tackle and we'll have multiple lines working different depths and presentations. Expect to see flying fish scatter as we approach productive water, and don't be surprised when we mark massive schools of bait on the fish finder. The Atlantic's continental shelf creates an underwater landscape that funnels fish through specific corridors, and we'll position ourselves right in their path. Between the action, you'll have cold drinks and snacks to keep your energy up, plus our crew captures photos and videos so you can relive every moment.
Trolling Tactics & Blue Water Gear
We run a spread of five to seven lines using a mix of high-speed trolling lures, ballyhoo rigs, and live bait when conditions call for it. The outriggers keep our lines separated while we pull cedar plugs, skirted ballyhoo, and diving plugs at speeds between 6-12 knots depending on what we're targeting. When we hit structure like underwater humps or FADs, we'll often slow down and work jigs or live bait in the strike zone. The boat's equipped with 30-80 pound class tackle, and we'll match your gear to the target species – lighter stuff for mahi and heavier rods for the big tuna and wahoo. Circle hooks are standard for conservation, and we'll walk you through proper fighting techniques so you can boat your fish efficiently. GPS and fish finder technology help us locate temperature breaks, weed lines, and structure that concentrate baitfish.
Target Species You'll Want to Hook
Goliath Grouper are the giants of the reef, and when you hook one of these bruisers, you'll know it immediately. These fish can exceed 400 pounds and will test every ounce of your strength and the boat's anchor system. They're year-round residents around deeper wrecks and ledges, often holding tight to structure before making powerful runs toward the bottom. The fight is pure muscle – no fancy jumps, just raw power that'll leave your arms burning. Most anglers consider landing a goliath grouper a bucket-list achievement.
Yellowcheek Wrasse might not be the biggest fish on our target list, but they're gorgeous reef dwellers that add variety to your catch. These colorful fish inhabit the same structures as our larger targets, often taking smaller baits intended for snapper. They're most active during daylight hours and put up a scrappy fight relative to their size. Their vibrant colors make for great photos, and they're excellent table fare when regulations allow harvest.
Mahi Mahi are every angler's favorite – they hit hard, jump like crazy, and their electric colors are absolutely stunning when they're fired up. We typically find them around floating debris, weed lines, or free-swimming in blue water from late spring through fall. When you find one mahi, there's usually more nearby, so we'll often circle back and work the area thoroughly. Their aerial displays are legendary, and a good-sized bull mahi will give you a fight you won't forget.
Wahoo are speed demons that'll make your drag sing like nothing else. These torpedo-shaped predators cruise the deep blue hunting ballyhoo and flying fish, often striking our high-speed trolling lures with incredible violence. A big wahoo can peel off 200 yards of line in seconds, and their razor-sharp teeth require wire leaders. They're most active during cooler months but can be caught year-round in deeper waters. The initial run is absolutely electric – pure speed that gets your heart pumping.
Red Snapper are the bread and butter of offshore structure fishing, holding around wrecks, reefs, and hard bottom in 80-200 feet of water. These smart fish require finesse – light leaders, fresh bait, and patience. They're notorious for testing your drag system with their bulldog fighting style, making long runs toward structure where they can cut you off. Peak season runs from late spring through early fall, and a cooler full of quality snappers makes for some of the best eating you'll find in the ocean.
