Lake Michigan Fishing Charter - Weekend Warriors
Lake Michigan holds some of the best fishing in the Great Lakes, and our 6-hour Saturday-Sunday charter puts you right in the thick of it. With just 3 spots available, you'll get personal attention from our crew while we target everything from hard-fighting salmon to tasty yellow perch. This isn't your typical crowded boat trip – we keep it small so everyone gets their shots at landing fish. Whether you're after your first lake trout or looking to add another king salmon to your tally, we'll put you on the fish.
What to Expect on the Water
We launch early when the fish are most active, typically around sunrise when the water's calm and the bite is hot. Lake Michigan can be moody, but that's part of what makes it such a productive fishery. Our captain knows the structure, the temperature breaks, and where different species hang out depending on the season. You'll spend your 6 hours covering serious water, from shallow nearshore areas where perch school up to deeper zones where the big trout and salmon cruise. The boat's equipped with quality rods, reels, and all the tackle you'll need. Just bring yourself, some snacks, and get ready to learn why Lake Michigan fishing keeps anglers coming back year after year. The weekend slots fill up fast because that's when most folks can get out, so don't wait if you're thinking about it.
Trolling Tactics & Gear Setup
Lake Michigan fishing is all about covering water and finding the right depth where fish are feeding. We run multiple lines at different levels using downriggers, planer boards, and lead core setups to maximize our chances. The captain will adjust our speed and direction based on what the fish finder shows and where we're marking bait. You'll use medium to heavy action rods that can handle the weight of our rigs and the power of a big king salmon making a run. Don't worry if you've never used downriggers before – our crew will walk you through everything and help you fight the fish once they're hooked. We'll be running spoons, plugs, and flasher-fly combinations that have proven themselves on these waters. The key is staying flexible and switching up presentations until we find what's working that day. Lake Michigan fish can be picky, but when you dial in the right combo of lure, depth, and speed, the action can be nonstop.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Coho salmon are pure energy when they hit your line. These silver rockets typically run 3-8 pounds and fight way above their weight class, jumping and stripping drag like fish twice their size. They're most active in spring and fall when water temperatures are cooler, and they love to chase baitfish in the top 30 feet of water. What makes coho special is their willingness to bite and their acrobatic fights – you'll know immediately when one grabs your lure.
Chinook salmon are the kings of Lake Michigan for good reason. These bruisers can push 20-30 pounds or more, and landing one is a real accomplishment. They prefer deeper, cooler water and are most active during spring and early summer. Kings are known for their long, powerful runs that can take you into your backing if you're not careful. The meat is excellent, and the bragging rights last forever. Every angler should experience the thrill of a big chinook peeling line off their reel.
Brown trout are the smartest fish in the lake and arguably the most challenging to consistently catch. They can grow huge – 10-15 pounders aren't uncommon – but they're incredibly finicky about presentation. Browns often feed at night or in low-light conditions, making early morning trips productive. They're ambush predators that lurk near structure, and when one crushes your lure, you'll feel the difference immediately. The fight is bulldogged and determined rather than flashy.
American yellow perch might not be the biggest fish in the lake, but they're definitely among the tastiest. These striped beauties typically run 8-12 inches and often bite in schools, so when you find them, you can fill your cooler quickly. Perch prefer shallower water and are active throughout the day, making them perfect targets when the bigger predators aren't cooperating. Kids especially love catching perch because they bite readily and are easy to handle.
Lake trout are the native bruisers of the deep water, often found in 60-100+ feet during warmer months. These prehistoric-looking fish can live for decades and grow to impressive sizes. Lakers fight differently than salmon – more of a steady, powerful pull that tests your endurance. They're most active in cooler water, making spring and fall prime times. Catching a big lake trout is special because you're connecting with a fish that's truly wild and has been roaming these depths for years.
