Private 5-Hour Inshore Morning Trip in Cedar Point
Cedar Point's backwaters are calling, and Captain John's ready to put you on some serious fish. This 5-hour morning charter takes you into North Carolina's prime inshore fishing grounds aboard a comfortable 26' Pathfinder that's built for these shallow waters. We're talking about exploring marshes, creeks, and river systems where the fish are fat and happy – and plenty willing to take your bait when you know where to find them.
What to Expect on the Water
Your day starts early when the water's calm and the fish are actively feeding. Captain John knows these Cedar Point waters like the back of his hand, and he'll run you to the spots that are producing. We're fishing structure, grass beds, and oyster bars where redfish cruise and speckled trout hang out waiting for an easy meal. The 26' Pathfinder gives us the perfect platform – shallow enough draft to get into the skinny water where the big fish hide, but stable enough that everyone on board can fish comfortably. You'll have room for up to 6 anglers, making this a great trip for families or a group of buddies looking to get bent. The boat's rigged with quality tackle and all the gear you need, so just bring yourself and get ready to put some fish in the box.
Techniques & Tackle Setup
We're running light tackle here – typically 15-20 pound spinning gear that gives you the feel of the fight without being too heavy for the conditions. Captain John will have you rigged with everything from live shrimp under popping corks to soft plastic baits that imitate the baitfish these predators are keyed in on. You'll learn to work the grass lines, pitch baits up against structure, and read the water for signs of feeding fish. When we're targeting redfish in the shallows, we'll sight cast to cruising fish – there's nothing quite like watching a red drum inhale your bait in two feet of crystal clear water. For trout, we're usually working deeper grass beds and drop-offs where they ambush prey. The captain will switch up techniques based on conditions, tides, and what the fish are telling us that day.
Top Catches This Season
Redfish are the bread and butter of Cedar Point inshore fishing, and these copper-colored bulldogs will test your drag system. They average 18-27 inches in these waters, with plenty of slot fish that make for excellent table fare. Reds are year-round residents here, but during the cooler months they school up in deeper holes and channels, making them easier to target consistently. What makes catching them so addictive is their fight – they'll make long, powerful runs and use every bit of structure they can find to try and break you off.
Speckled trout are another customer favorite, especially the gator trout that prowl these waters during winter months. These spotted beauties are ambush predators that hang around grass beds and drop-offs. The best part about trout fishing here is the variety – you'll catch keeper-sized fish in the 14-16 inch range mixed with some real slobs pushing 20+ inches. They're aggressive feeders when conditions are right, and there's nothing quite like the distinctive headshake of a good trout on light tackle.
Black drum are the bulldozers of the inshore scene, and Cedar Point's waters hold some real monsters. These fish can push 30+ pounds and will give you a workout you won't forget. They're bottom feeders that love oyster bars and structure, making them perfect targets when we're fishing the productive waters around Cedar Point. Drum fishing is all about patience and feeling the bite – they're not flashy fighters, but they're incredibly strong and determined.
Sheepshead are the convict-striped thieves that will test your bait-stealing skills around structure. These fish have human-like teeth designed for crushing crustaceans, and they're notorious for picking bait clean without getting hooked. When you do connect with a good sheepshead, you're in for a fight – they're surprisingly strong for their size and make excellent table fare. The key to sheepshead success is feeling the subtle taps and setting the hook at just the right moment.
Bluefish round out the target species list and provide non-stop action when they're around. These voracious predators travel in schools and will hit just about anything you throw at them. They're perfect for getting kids or new anglers hooked on fishing since they're aggressive and fight hard. Blues are seasonal visitors to these waters, but when they show up, you can load the boat with them in short order.
