6-Hour Private Offshore Trip (AM) – Cape Horn Boat
Looking to get away from the crowds and spend some serious time on the water? This 6-hour morning charter aboard Team Buck Rogers' 37-foot Cape Horn center console is exactly what you need. We're talking about a proper offshore fishing machine here – triple 300HP Yamaha engines that'll get you to the good spots fast, and all the electronics and tackle you need to make it count. With room for up to 4 anglers, you'll have plenty of space to work without bumping elbows, and our captain knows these waters like the back of his hand.
What to Expect on the Water
We push off at 8:00 AM sharp, which puts us on the reefs and wrecks right when the fish are getting active. The Cape Horn is built for this kind of work – she's got GPS, radar, and a quality fishfinder to mark structure and baitfish. You'll find outriggers ready for trolling, a live bait well that keeps your offerings frisky, and an ice box to keep your catch fresh. There's even a head on board, so no need to cut the trip short. The wireless trolling motor comes in handy when we're working specific spots or drifting baits. Everything's included – tackle, bait, licenses, the works. You just need to show up ready to fish and maybe bring some snacks and drinks for the crew.
Bottom Fishing and Trolling
Depending on what's biting and the season, we'll either drop down to the bottom or put lines out and cover water. Bottom fishing around the wrecks and reefs is where you'll find the amberjack, snapper, and triggerfish holding tight to structure. We'll use circle hooks and heavy enough tackle to keep these fish from diving back into the wreck. When we're trolling, it's all about speed and spread – getting those spoons, plugs, and ballyhoo working in the water column where the mackerel, cobia, and barracuda are cruising. The outriggers let us run a proper pattern, and when something hits, you'll know it. The captain will coach you through the fight, whether you're cranking up a big amberjack from 80 feet or chasing down a king mackerel that's making a run.
Top Catches This Season
Great Barracuda are absolute rockets when they hit your bait. These toothy predators cruise the nearshore waters and around structure, often hitting trolled baits with incredible speed. They'll typically run 10-30 pounds in these waters, with the occasional monster pushing 40-plus. Spring through fall is prime time, and they're known for their acrobatic fights – expect jumps and long runs that'll test your drag. What makes them so exciting is that explosive initial hit and the way they can change direction in a heartbeat.
Cobia are the gentle giants that get anglers hooked on offshore fishing. These brown sharks (as some folks call them) can be found around structure, floating debris, or just cruising the open water. They're curious fish that often come right up to the boat, making for some sight-fishing opportunities. Running anywhere from 20 to 60 pounds, they're strong fighters that prefer to slug it out down deep rather than jump. Late spring through early fall is your best bet, and they're prized for their excellent table fare and that bulldogging fight that'll wear you out.
Yellowtail Amberjack are the muscle cars of the reef. These bruisers live around wrecks and hard bottom, and when you hook one, you're in for a workout. They'll typically range from 15 to 40 pounds, but the big ones can push 60-plus. They dive straight for the structure when hooked, so you need to turn them quick or risk getting cut off. Peak season runs from late spring through fall, and what makes them special is that raw power – they're built like linebackers and fight like it too. Plus, they're excellent eating when prepared right.
Bull Shark encounters add serious adrenaline to any fishing trip. These apex predators can show up anywhere from nearshore to offshore waters, following bait schools and cruising structure. They range from small juveniles to massive adults over 200 pounds, and they're year-round residents that seem most active during warmer months. What makes them exciting is their unpredictability and raw power – when a big bull takes your bait, you know you're connected to something special. The fight is all power and endurance, with none of the acrobatics of other species.
Spanish Mackerel are the perfect species for non-stop action. These smaller members of the mackerel family are aggressive feeders that travel in schools, often providing multiple hookups when you find them. Running 1-4 pounds on average, they're perfect on light tackle and great for beginners or anyone who wants steady action. They're most active from spring through fall, and what makes them so enjoyable is their willingness to bite and their fantastic table quality. They're also excellent bait for larger species like cobia and sharks.
