Half Day AM Fishing & Swimming – Inshore Fun for All Ages
When you're looking for the perfect blend of fishing action and family relaxation, this 4-hour morning adventure with Twisted Palms Salty Adventures hits all the right notes. We've designed this trip specifically for families who want their kids to experience the thrill of catching fish without sitting still all day. You'll spend the first half targeting some of the Intracoastal's most popular species, then cool off at a pristine shallow flat where everyone can swim and unwind. It's become a customer favorite because it keeps both seasoned anglers and restless young ones engaged from start to finish.
What to Expect on the Water
Your morning kicks off bright and early as we head into the productive waters of the Intracoastal Waterway. The first two hours are dedicated to light tackle fishing, perfect for anglers of all skill levels. We'll work the grass flats, oyster bars, and drop-offs where Speckled Trout, Redfish, and other inshore species love to feed during the cooler morning hours. The beauty of this fishery is its consistency – even beginners regularly hook up with quality fish. After we've had our fun with the rods, I'll run you over to one of my favorite shallow island flats. The water here is crystal clear, knee-deep, and perfect for floating around while the kids explore. It's like having your own private beach for an hour, and the timing couldn't be better when the sun starts heating up.
Light Tackle Techniques
We keep the fishing approach simple and effective on this trip. I'll have you working with live shrimp under popping corks and soft plastic baits on jig heads – two proven methods that produce consistent results in these waters. The popping cork setup is especially great for families because it gives you that satisfying "pop-pop-pause" rhythm while keeping your bait in the strike zone. When we're working the grass beds for Speckled Trout, I'll show you how to read the water and spot those subtle signs that scream "fish here." For the Redfish, we'll target the oyster bars and shallow edges where they cruise looking for an easy meal. Everything we use is light enough for kids to handle, but strong enough to land some respectable fish.
Target Species You'll Want to Hook
Sea Trout are the bread and butter of our Intracoastal fishing, and for good reason. These beautiful spotted fish are aggressive feeders, especially during the morning hours when the water temperature is just right. They typically run 14-18 inches in these waters, with the occasional 20-incher that'll make your day. Spring through fall offers the most consistent action, and they're perfect for teaching kids proper fish handling since they're not too heavy but still put up a solid fight. What makes Speckled Trout special is their willingness to hit both live bait and artificials, giving everyone on board multiple chances to connect.
Redfish are the prize catch that gets everyone's heart pumping. These copper-colored bruisers are built for power, and even a smaller 18-inch Red will test your drag and teach respect for proper technique. They're year-round residents in our area, but late summer and early fall bring the best numbers as they school up near the passes. What I love about targeting Reds with families is their predictable behavior – they cruise the same flats and oyster bars, making them easier to locate than many species. Plus, their distinctive black spot and bronze coloring make for fantastic photos before we release them.
Spanish Mackerel show up in good numbers during the warmer months, and they're absolute rockets when hooked. These sleek predators typically range from 12-16 inches and are known for their blistering runs and acrobatic jumps. They're particularly active during moving tides and often school up in large numbers, meaning when you find one, you'll usually find many. Kids love the fast action Mackerel provide, and they're excellent eating if you decide to keep a few for the table. Look for them from late spring through early fall when the water temperature stays consistently warm.
Bluefish are the scrappy fighters that never give up without a battle. These toothy predators are most active during cooler months and are known for their aggressive strikes and bulldogging fights. They typically run 10-14 inches in our area, but don't let the size fool you – pound for pound, they're some of the strongest fish we encounter. Bluefish are excellent for teaching proper fish handling techniques since their sharp teeth demand respect and careful attention. They're also fantastic table fare when prepared fresh, making them a popular choice for families looking to take dinner home.
