What is the World Fisheries Congress?

underwater, corals, fish

The World Fisheries Congress is an international conference held every four years and is organized and run by the World Council of Fisheries Societies. It has been referred to as the ‘Olympics’ of professional meetings on fisheries. The World Council of Fisheries Societies is a non-governmental and non-profit organization that aims to promote international cooperation in fisheries science, management, and conservation. The council comprised ten member organizations and was established after the 1st World Fisheries Congress in Athens, Greece, in 1992.

The current members of the council are:

  1. American Fisheries Society
  2. Australian Society for Fish Biology
  3. Canadian Aquatic Resources Section
  4. Fisheries Society of the British Isles
  5. Indian Society of Fisheries Professionals
  6. Japanese Society of Fisheries Science
  7. Korean Society of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences
  8. Mexican Fisheries Society
  9. World Sturgeon Conservation Society
  10. Zoological Society of Pakistan

The conference has delegates meeting from all over the world to exchange ideas and perspectives about new research, emerging issues, scientific breakthroughs, and governance linked to fisheries science, industry, sustainability, conservation, and management. The 2024 event explores the theme of ‘Fish and Fisheries at the Food-Water-Energy Nexus.’ The goal of the symposium’s theme is to concentrate on current and emerging impacts on the world’s fish and fisheries and delve into how society can successfully develop approaches that allow the world’s marine and freshwater systems to provide sustainable fish species and fisheries into the future.

Seattle, Washington, was chosen as the host city because it provides easy global travel access and many fantastic attractions. Seattle is ideal because it is at the center of internationally important marine and anadromous fisheries and has deep academic, cultural, and socioeconomic ties to fish and fisheries.

What to Expect in the 2024 Event

The members of the International Program Committee are presently working to refine the conference themes, develop its content, and promote it using associated press and appropriate networks. There is a call for sessions where those interested can submit proposals for symposia, workshops, and other non-traditional formats to exchange information related to the event’s themes. If you’re interested in presenting at the 2024 World Fisheries Congress, you can find the requirements for applications and submission forms for various types of presentations through their official website. The deadline for submissions is on December 2, 2022. Public notices of the status of proposals will be released by February 1, 2023.

There is also an open call for nominations for the International Fisheries Science Prize from the International Fisheries Section of the American Fisheries Society. The prize is the World Council of Fisheries Societies’ highest award honored to an individual every four years for their contributions to global fisheries and marine science and conservation. The deadline for submitting nominations is on January 31, 2023. The basis for selection includes the breadth, significance, and duration of the nominee’s achievements, especially those of global scope and perspective.

In June, a similar event will follow the 2024 World Fisheries Congress, the United Nations Ocean Conference, held in Lisbon, Portugal. It was attended by US President Joe Biden, who announced several steps the Biden Administration is taking to combat the climate change crisis and boost the ocean economy. New actions discussed include the acceleration of efforts across the US Government and globally to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing and connected labor abuses and overfishing, food security support through aquatic and blue foods contributions, funding for ocean and coastal resilience, habitat restoration, and marine debris prevention, and to conserve, restore, and sustainably manage coral reef ecosystems, and more. President Biden also declared June as National Ocean Month.
