Alexander City is known to locals as Alex City. In 1872, Alexander City was formerly called Youngsville, after its founder James Young. The city was renamed in honor of Edward Porter Alexander, the president of Savannah and Memphis Railroad, which helped the city's economy.

Alexander City is rich with state parks and natural resources. After the Alabama Power project created Alexander City's most recognizable natural asset, the Lake Martin, its economy has grown. Alexander City is also a booming farming community. The Southern Star Farm is home to animals, such as alpacas, llamas, horses, dogs, and cats, that capture the visitors' attention. Tourists can also spend a day playing golf at the Willow Point Golf Course. The golf course boasts breathtaking views as it sits on the peaceful shores of Lake Martin. The golf course is suited for golfers of all skill levels but is more suitable for intermediates and professional players.

Lake Martin is undoubtedly the primary fishing location in Alexander City. The lake is artificially made and is surrounded by different marinas that offer guided fishing trips. The lake is home to largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, bluegill, yellow perch, shellcracker, white bass, channel catfish, blue catfish, and Alabama bass.

The Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division reserve striped bass in Lake Martin every year. Special striped bass regulations apply to the lake. While summer and spring are the best times to fish in Alexander City, anglers can also visit Lake Martin. It is a popular winter fishing spot in Tallapoosa County.

Anglers can go bank fishing, spinning, fly fishing, or baitcasting in Lake Martin. Anglers can also book a fishing charter in Lake Martin, rent a boat and go drift fishing and kayak fishing. Lake Martin also allows anglers to go offshore fishing to target sportfish.

The Wind Creek State Park is another well-known fishing spot in Alexander City. Wind Creek is linked to the shoreline of Lake Martin, making the Wind Creek State Park an angler’s paradise. Anglers can fish from the fishing pier that is open 24 hours.
