Charlotte Fishing: The Hornet’s Nest

Charlotte may be a busy city, but the place is also full of recreational fishing activities for local and visiting anglers alike. Many parks in Charlotte offer year-round fishing opportunities featuring their ponds and lakes. 

Freedom Park, a place near uptown Charlotte, is a spot for largemouth bass, channel catfish, and bluegill fishing. The pond’s banks are accessible all over, making a day of fishing quite productive. Up north is Latta Plantation Nature Preserve, a historical spot where bank fishing in Mountain Island Lake is active. Blue catfish, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and black crappie are available here.

Over at McAlpine Creek Park, there is a 3-acre lake stocked with bluegill, catfish, and largemouth bass for anglers to catch. A small pier is also accessible, a perfect spot for fly fishing. The lake is accessible on all sides and has benches along the banks without the pier.

Colonel Francis Beatty Park is considered one of Charlotte’s most active fishing spots. It has a 20-acre pond with a maximum depth of 18 feet inside the 265-acre park. Stocked largemouth bass and bluegill are the most common game in the pond. 

Charlotte fishing is year-round, but ice fishing is considered the most challenging, as thick ice does not last long. January and February are the perfect months to do ice fishing, but anglers must still be cautious.

1. Bechtler Museum of Modern Art

Visit the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art when you come to Charlotte. The place is a magnificent 36,500 square foot museum created for a modern art exhibition in the mid-20th-century. The museum’s beautiful building was designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta and was named after Andreas Bechtler, a native of Switzerland. He inherited and put together a collection of more than 1,400 artworks made by prominent figures in the 20th-century.

This museum is a place for all ages! Located in uptown Charlotte, Discovery Place Science is accessible to locals and is a must-see for tourists. With many hands-on activities and experiences, it will undoubtedly blow anyone’s mind. The museum features a "Thinker Space" and labs, aquariums, animal exhibits, and a two-story urban rain forest.
