Extending to the east of Galveston Bay, East Bay is a twenty-mile stretch bay separating Bolivar Peninsula from mainland Texas. Surrounded by long stretches of beaches with pristine waters, East Bay is a productive location for fishing as well as many outdoor pursuits you can think about. Whether you just want to stay on the beach with friends or family or do water adventures such as kayaking, paddleboarding, surfing, and others, East Bay is an ideal location. Aside from these, it also takes pride in its rich wildlife so birdwatching and trails along the parks are also among the other activities that can be done here. Golfing, historical tours, and shopping can also be added to your list for a complete vacation.

Abundant Angling Opportunities in East Bay

East Bay, just like its neighboring bay (Galveston Bay), is an angler-friendly and productive fishing location along the Texas coast. With a huge oyster beds area, the East Bay waters are home to two favorite Texas coast species, redfish and speckled trout. Flounder and black drum that dwell along muddy areas can also be spotted here. If you happen to be around the reefs or structures, a chance to catch cobia, sheepshead, crevalle jack, and mangrove snappers is high.

Regardless of your angling level, East Bay fishing requires different techniques. Whether you employ conventional casting, light tackle fishing, or fly fishing, catching specific species mentioned above is possible if you are familiar enough with the behavior of the species you’re targeting. Flounder can be hooked using conventional casting, but bowfishing or flounder gigging can also be done if you’re an angler who wishes to add fun and challenge to your fishing experience. The rest of the species can be hooked either by light tackle or fly fishing.

To access the bay, there are plenty of options to take. You may try fishing from a kayak or by the shore if you want to be respectful to the environment. For some who explore most areas and have a guided fishing experience, taking a charter is the best option.

Even if East bay provides a year-round fishing opportunity, it is always best to know which species bite on specific months. Watch out for the “flounder run” from October to December as flounder migrates to the Gulf of Mexico. Oyster bed-dwellers such as redfish and speckled trout are also abundant during these months. In spring, black drum and cobia gather in shallower areas as they spawn, so these are the best catch in this season.
