If you're looking for an off-the-beaten fishing adventure spot less than 30 minutes away from Raleigh, head east of the state capital to the city of Rocky Mount. This North America historic district, built around the community that flourished around the Tar River, offers the visiting angler fair fishing opportunities and easy access to other equally excellent angling areas in the northeast region of North Carolina.
Much of Rocky Mount's outdoor recreation is focused around the Tar River, which flows through the entire city. The river trail is dotted with beautiful parks, paddling routes, and walking paths, providing the guest angler great spots for targeting a bounty of freshwater species. Some areas even offer opportunities to try fly fishing and other techniques.
The Tar River is the main waterbody to fish in Rocky Mount, and the city has no shortage of spots and facilities to access the fine river. The best place for fishing in the area is Battle Park, considered the central hub on the Tar River Trail. Within the park, you will find the Greenway Trail. This area offers fishing facilities, including a remarkably ample open space, a boat and canoe launch, several fishing piers, and picnic shelters to enjoy your catch. Some of the most commonly caught fish here include crappie, channel catfish, flathead catfish, largemouth bass, black rockfish, and bluegill. However, many anglers favor the park as a spot to catch the spring run of American shad and hickory shad.
The Tar River Reservoir is yet another excellent fishing spot within the city. It is easier to fish on the smaller side, particularly on windy days. Seasoned local anglers flock to the lake to fish for crappie, especially around structures. Largemouth bass, channel catfish, flathead catfish, and bluegill can also be caught in the lake. Visiting anglers are advised to have everything they need for their fishing trip to this area as it is quite far away from the nearest camping and RV park. The lake, though productive, is known for its instability, so if you're new to the reservoir, the best way to explore it is by booking a fishing charter or guide.
There are even more spots just a few minutes outside Rocky Mount, where you can access the Tar River. Upper Tar River's shallow areas are the ideal places to practice techniques and tactics like fly fishing and light tackle. The town of Tarboro has boating access areas along the river, namely Bells Bridge, Dunbar Bridge, and Old Sparta, the lengths of which offer fair fishing. Wilson, another Rocky Mount neighboring district, has a few more alternative fishing spots as peaceful as they are productive. You can enjoy fishing and other outdoor activities like hiking and boating on Lake Wilson. Millstone Creek offers excellent stream fishing, particularly before sunrise and late afternoon. Introducing your entire family to fishing? Visit Wiggins Mill Reservoir, where you can comfortably try fishing while enjoying the convenience of a boat rental and a bait shop. The odd fishing report claims the lake is overfished, but it still offers a relaxing fishing atmosphere.
Support young upstarts in Rocky Mount Mills, the first craft brewery in North Carolina. The neighborhood is the best place to visit for foodies as it is teeming with new restaurants and breweries.
Visit the Imperial Centre with the entire family. This arts and sciences hub is home to Rocky Mount Children's Museum and Science Center, the Maria V. Howard Arts Center, Cummins Planetarium, and a community theater. The center goes the extra mile for its visitors with its variety of weekly and seasonal events. Check their calendar before planning a visit.
