Crystal River Scalloping Adventure
Looking for a primo day on the water that the whole family can enjoy? Our 4-hour Crystal River scalloping and snorkeling trip puts you right in the heart of Florida's most productive scallop beds. This isn't your typical fishing charter – we're talking about a hands-on underwater harvest that'll have you diving for bay scallops in some of the clearest water you'll find anywhere along the Nature Coast. With Fowl Attitude Outfitters, you're getting a top-rated experience that combines the thrill of the hunt with the beauty of Crystal River's pristine flats.
What to Expect on the Water
We'll start the day by running out to the best scallop beds Crystal River has to offer. These shallow grass flats are where the magic happens – crystal-clear water that lets you spot scallops from the surface, and depths that are perfect for beginners and kids alike. Most of our scalloping happens in 3-6 feet of water, so you don't need to be an Olympic swimmer to fill your bag. The water temperature stays comfortable through scallop season, usually sitting in the mid-70s to low-80s, making it perfect for spending hours in the water. You'll be amazed at how quickly you develop an eye for spotting those telltale shells nestled in the grass beds. Between scallop hunting, we'll show you some of the area's best snorkeling spots where you'll see everything from spotted seatrout cruising the flats to stingrays gliding over the sandy bottom.
Gear and Techniques
We provide all the snorkeling gear you'll need – masks, snorkels, and fins in all sizes. The technique is simple but effective: we'll anchor up on productive beds and you'll snorkel along the grass flats, looking for those distinctive fan-shaped shells. Bay scallops like to nestle into the turtle grass, and once you get your eye trained, you'll start seeing them everywhere. The key is moving slowly and methodically – scallops can actually swim away if they sense you coming too fast. We'll teach you the proper way to collect them (always check for size and keep only the legal ones) and how to store them in your mesh bag. The boat is equipped with a dive ladder for easy entry and exit, plus fresh water rinse for your gear. We also carry a few extra masks and snorkels in case anything gets lost overboard.
Marine Life You'll See
Bay scallops are the star of the show during our July through September season. These little bivalves are fascinating creatures – they actually have dozens of tiny blue eyes around the edge of their shells and can jet away by rapidly opening and closing their shells. They're filter feeders that love the nutrient-rich waters around Crystal River's spring-fed flats. What makes scalloping here so special is the abundance – Crystal River consistently produces some of the best scalloping in Florida. The legal size is 2 inches across, and a good day will see each person limit out with their daily bag of 2 gallons of whole scallops or 1 pint of scallop meat. Peak season runs from mid-July through early September, with the best action typically happening in August when the scallops are at their largest size. While you're hunting scallops, keep your eyes peeled for the resident manatees that call Crystal River home year-round. These gentle giants are most active during the cooler morning hours and often cruise right through the scallop beds. You'll also spot plenty of redfish, snook, and tarpon patrolling the flats – Crystal River's spring-fed waters create the perfect ecosystem for both shellfish and game fish.
