4 Hour Private Offshore Reef & Trolling Charter
Looking for some serious fishing action off Carolina Beach? Captain Fox and the crew at FoxSea Lady Charters have you covered with this customer-favorite 4-hour private trip that puts you right where the fish are biting. Whether you're bringing the whole family or a group of seasoned anglers, this afternoon charter delivers consistent action on Carolina's productive nearshore waters. You'll have the boat to yourselves for up to 6 people, giving everyone plenty of room to fish without the crowds you'd find on head boats.
What to Expect on the Water
This trip gives you the best of both worlds - you can choose between trolling for Spanish mackerel or dropping lines on the reefs for bottom fish. The trolling option is perfect if you want to cover water and target fast-moving pelagics like Spanish mackerel and bonito. We'll pull spreads of spoons and small lures through the best feeding areas while you kick back and wait for that rod to bend. The reef fishing puts you right over structure where black sea bass, sea trout, and bluefish call home. Just remember, many of the fish we catch on the reefs need to go back in the water due to regulations, but you'll still get plenty of action and usually enough keepers for a fresh dinner. This isn't a meat haul trip - it's all about the fishing experience and having a blast on the water.
Trolling vs Reef Techniques
When we're trolling, we'll set up a spread of 4-6 rods with different lures to cover the water column. Spanish mackerel love small Clark spoons and Got-Cha plugs, especially in silver and white. We'll adjust trolling speed between 4-8 knots depending on what the fish want that day. The key is staying mobile and hitting different temperature breaks and structure. For reef fishing, we anchor up over productive bottom and drop down with traditional bottom rigs loaded with squid, cut bait, or live shrimp. Circle hooks are the way to go for better fish survival, and we'll have everything rigged and ready. The boat carries quality Penn and Shimano gear, but feel free to bring your own tackle if you've got favorites. Either way, you'll be fishing with gear that can handle whatever Carolina's waters throw at you.

Species You'll Want to Hook
Spanish mackerel are the bread and butter of our trolling trips, and for good reason. These silver bullets hit lures with serious attitude and put up a great fight for their size. Most fish run 1-3 pounds, but the bigger females can push 5 pounds and really test your drag. Spanish mackerel move through our area from late spring through early fall, with the best action typically in the warmer months. They're also some of the best eating fish in the ocean when prepared fresh - just fillet them and throw them on the grill with some lemon.
Atlantic bonito show up during the cooler months and bring serious power to the fight. These fish look like small tunas because that's basically what they are. They'll smoke drag and make long runs that'll get your heart pumping. Bonito typically weigh 3-8 pounds but fight like fish twice their size. They're a prized catch for any angler looking to test their skills against a true speedster.
Sea trout are one of the most popular targets on our reef trips, and the nearshore reefs hold some nice ones. These spotted beauties are great table fare and put up a respectable fight. You'll find them hanging around structure feeding on shrimp and small baitfish. The best trout fishing usually happens during moving water, so we time our reef trips around the tides.
Bluefish are the aggressive bruisers of the bunch. When they're feeding, you'll know it - they hit baits and lures with zero hesitation and fight dirty all the way to the boat. Blues range from small snapper-size fish perfect for kids to catch, all the way up to 10+ pound choppers that'll put a serious bend in your rod. They're around most of the year but really fire up when the water temperatures start dropping in fall.
Black sea bass might not be the flashiest fish, but they're reef fishing favorites for good reason. These chunky bottom dwellers are excellent eating and always ready to bite. Most of our sea bass run 1-2 pounds, but the structure off Carolina Beach holds some real quality fish. Keep in mind that sea bass have strict seasons and size limits, so many need to be released, but they're still fun to catch and photograph.
