Deep Sea Fishing Orange Beach
When you're ready to leave the inshore waters behind and chase the big boys, Captain Will and Great Escape Charters will get you there. We're talking about heading way out into the Gulf's deep blue waters where the real monsters live – wahoo that'll peel line off your reel in seconds, sailfish putting on aerial shows, and marlin that'll test every muscle in your body. This isn't your typical bay fishing trip. We're going where the water turns that perfect cobalt blue and the bottom drops off into the abyss, usually 20-30 miles offshore from Orange Beach.
What to Expect on the Water
Captain Will knows these Gulf waters like the back of his hand, and he's going to put you on fish. We'll be running out to the deep water rips and structure where the pelagics hunt, usually in 400-2000 feet of water depending on conditions and what's biting. The boat holds up to 6 anglers, so you're not fighting for rod space or dealing with a crowded deck. Most days we're looking at a full day on the water – these fish don't live in your backyard, so we've got to make that run out to where they patrol. The Alabama Gulf Coast gives us access to some of the best bluewater fishing in the northern Gulf, and Captain Will's got the local knowledge to put you on the right spots when the bite is hot.
Trolling the Blue Water
This is all about trolling – we're covering water and presenting multiple baits to locate schools of fish or cruising predators. Captain Will runs a spread of outriggers and flat lines, mixing lures and rigged baits to match what the fish want on any given day. You'll see everything from big skirted trolling lures for marlin and sailfish to smaller high-speed lures perfect for wahoo and mahi. The tackle is built for these fish – we're talking 30-50 pound class gear that can handle long runs and brutal fights. When something hits, you'll know it. These aren't gentle taps – billfish and wahoo hit trolled baits like freight trains. Captain Will and his crew handle all the rigging, bait prep, and boat positioning, so your job is simple: hang on and fight fish.
Species You'll Want to Hook
Atlantic Sailfish are the stars of many offshore trips, and for good reason. These fish average 40-70 pounds and put on some of the most spectacular fights you'll ever see. When a sail hits your bait, get ready for jumps, tail walks, and blistering runs. They're most active here from late spring through fall, often traveling in small schools. What makes them special is that combination of speed and acrobatics – they'll jump repeatedly, shaking their heads and showing off that massive dorsal fin.
Blue Marlin are the holy grail for serious offshore anglers. These apex predators can top 500 pounds and will give you the fight of your life. In the northern Gulf, most blues we see range from 150-400 pounds, but you never know when a true giant might show up. They're more common in summer and early fall when the water temps are prime. Blues are ambush predators that cruise the deep water edges, and when they decide to eat your bait, it's game on. The power of these fish is something you have to experience to believe.
Mahi Mahi bring both beauty and incredible eating to the table. These fish are pure muscle wrapped in electric colors – gold, green, and blue that light up when they're fighting. Mahi typically run 10-30 pounds in our waters, though bulls can push 50 pounds or more. They're often found around floating debris or weed lines, sometimes in good-sized schools. What's great about mahi is they're aggressive feeders and excellent table fare, so you get both the fight and a fantastic meal.
Wahoo are speed demons that will humble any angler. These fish are built for velocity – they can hit 60 mph and make runs that'll have you wondering if you have any line left. Most wahoo here run 20-60 pounds with razor-sharp teeth that can cut through wire leaders. They're typically caught while trolling at higher speeds, often taking high-speed lures or rigged ballyhoo. The initial run of a wahoo is legendary – they'll take 200-300 yards of line in seconds.
White Marlin are smaller than their blue cousins but every bit as exciting. These fish usually range from 40-80 pounds and are known for their aerial displays and stubborn fights. They're often more cooperative than blue marlin when it comes to eating baits, making them a favorite target for many captains. White marlin season typically peaks in summer, and they often show up in areas with good bait concentrations and proper water temperatures.
