About The Doctors Lake

About Doctors Lake, FL

Doctors Lake, despite its name, is an inlet connected to St.John’s River and the Atlantic Ocean. It got its reputation primarily because of its inclusion in the territory of Lake County. This inlet spans about 8320 acres of brackish waters due to the estuarine nature of the St. John’s River and the inlet’s connection to the Atlantic Ocean. Doctors Lake is located in Clay County, Florida. On the shoreline of Doctors Lake, there are many residential areas protected by docks and bulkheads against the tide. There is also a Doctors Lake park consisting of a 320-foot fishing pier and numerous stalls offering boat access towards the inlet.

Due to the inlet’s location, water slowly flows into Doctors Lake. However, during hurricane season, residents experience frequent stormwater runoff. Doctors Lake has also been managed by the St. Johns River Water Management District and the Doctors Lake Restoration. These organizations also cooperate regarding urban development along the shorelines to protect the people and the water quality.

Doctors Lake Fishing Description

All About Fishing in Doctors Lake, FL

Fishing in Harney River requires a Florida Fishing License. It is also important for anglers to follow the fishing regulations of Lake County. Although Doctors Lake is near residential and land development areas, fish can still be found even in shallow waters. However, recreational activities often occupy the shoreline, so fishing activities are often stationed farther from the coast.

Warm temperatures and brackish waters are what make Doctors Lake a good place for anglers because these qualities are favorable for the fish to go up the surface to find nutrients or mate, which in return leaves them visible and easy to be baited. Crappie, bluegill, black crappie, largemouth bass, speckled trout, and yellowmouth are the most common catch out of Doctors Lake. The best way to reel in a good catch is to go further than the shoreline and look for seagrass or vegetation because this is usually where schools of fish are found in Doctors Lake. The forested wetlands also serve as suitable fishing holes and photography spots because they are homes to fish species and birds.

Anglers can bring their favorite boats here, and there are also some pontoon boats available for public use in the marina.  Houseboats and speedboats can also be used here to fish or relax in the middle of the brackish waters of Doctors Lake.
