Tips of Advice for Aspiring Anglers

by Captain David Stump

There’s always time for one more cast.

I started my career as a guide and a local captain not long ago, but I have been a professional fishing guide since 2013. As a professional guide, I am more than willing to share my experiences, charter advice, and some of the best fishing tips I know. Our Facebook page is filled with past and recent trips, so if you are interested, do not hesitate to take a look. Salty Day Fishing Charters is the expert when it comes to inshore fishing at Crystal River because, with us, there’s never a salty day when fishing.

Catching fish can be a lot of fun, but catching is a process, so it is better for anglers to prepare to catch more fish. When fishing, anglers must always keep in mind that every day is a different day. The tides, moon, and weather all play a part in how we can accomplish our goals on every trip to make the best we can with the opportunity that is before us. If you are fishing in saltwater, you should think about the tides and currents when going fishing. The ebbing and flowing of the surges affect how, when, and where the bigger fish feed. It is also crucial to consider the best period of the day for a fishing adventure. The moon phases somehow affect your fishing success. So, it is vital to know the moon's impact on fishing and fish behavior. Humans and fish correspondingly are affected by different weather patterns. Fish can behave differently under different weather situations. Fish are not affected by rain, but the barometric pressure does affect them. I always urge anglers to check on the weather before heading out.

Aside from having enough knowledge about the moon, tides, and the weather, aspiring anglers need to know where to cast their line. I have been fishing in the waters of Florida for years, so I am more familiar with and can easily navigate the various fishing locations in the area. As an angler, you must have enough knowledge of your local waters and when to prospect for your targeted species. There are times that anglers use a topographical map of the body of water they are fishing for them to know what and where the different depths of the fishing spots are. Fish where the fish are to hook more fish. For me, it is also important to think of your safety, especially since I am a fishing guide who takes people on fishing trips. Bringing along a bottle of drinking water is essential, aside from carrying sunscreen, rain gear, and a first aid kit.
