Situated in Houston County, Alabama, Ashford was incorporated as a town in June 1891, two years after Alabama Midland Railway built a railroad line through the area. Ashford's economy is supported by the timber industry, which includes a large turpentine manufacturer. Still, for most of the area's history, Ashford was the center for naval store production, pulpwood harvesting, and cotton agriculture.

Ashford was named for a large ash tree located at a famous ford in a local creek. The area is a spot for tourists who want to unwind and spend quality time with their families.

Ashford is 19 miles southeast of the Chattahoochee River. The river separates the states of Georgia and Alabama. Many different types of wildlife live along the Chattahoochee River, and fishing is a widespread activity in the area. Another location where anglers can catch bass, catfish, and bluegill is Green Valley Farm Ponds, while on the eastern part of Ashford, anglers may find Wet Weather Pond, a body of water teeming with bass and catfish.

1. Alabama Midland Railroad Depot and Museum

The Alabama Midland Railroad Depot in Ashford, a late-19th-century building, is home to a museum, various exhibitions, and a convention center. The museum includes a restored caboose and a cargo rail car close to the depot. The Ashford Area Heritage Foundation runs the museum. As a mixed passenger-freight facility built in 1888, the depot served as a way station for trains traveling between Bainbridge, Georgia, and Montgomery, Montgomery County. The museum focuses its displays on southeast Alabama's golden age of the railroad period. Historical images and artifacts relating to the railroad are available for visitors. Many of these antiques were donated by former railroad workers.
