Here, you can fish the Tangipahoa River, a 122-mile waterbody in southwest Mississippi, before opening into Lake Pontchartrain. It is filled with Louisiana classics like spotted bass, largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, channel catfish, and blue catfish. The best and only way to access the river is via the highway bridges running along with the parish, such as Highway 38 near Tangipahoa, heading south to Highway 440; near Amite, Highway 10 heading south to Highway 16; and from Highway 16 going towards Highway 40 near Independence. On Highway 190, you will find deeper holes and slower currents that attract bigger fish.

Lake Maurepas is another water body that flows through the parish. It’s considered the freshwater body equivalent of Lake Pontchartrain. While it’s not as productive as Lake Pontchartrain, it does offer fair fishing for species such as bluegill, catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, spotted bass, green sunfish, redear sunfish, and warmouth.

For a challenging bass fishing excursion, turn your attention to the Tchefuncte River. The bass here can be pretty hard to catch. So if you’re getting frustrated, worry not. You can still target channel catfish, blue catfish, and flathead catfish in the river. Other species that get swept from Lake Pontchartrain include speckled trout and redfish.

For fun fly fishing, head to the intersecting waters of Tickfaw River, Blood River, and Natalbany River, located west of Hammond. But if your schedule can only allow you to fish during weekends, go for the Blood River branch of the intersecting rivers, specifically the north side of the Highway 22 bridge.
