Fishing is so prevalent in Bastrop that private companies like International Paper opened Bussey Brake, their private water supply reservoir, to the public for recreational fishing. When the reservoir’s mill became non-operational, the company donated the property to the government. Now, Bussey Brake is more productive than ever! The 2,200-acre lake, located north of Bastrop, was drained almost wholly to create a three-lane boat launching access and several fishing piers, one of which is ADA-accessible. Bussey Brake was revived, planted with healthy vegetation, and stocked with game fish to focus primarily on recreational fishing. Now, anglers may enjoy all the lake facilities, ensuring a wonderful fishing experience. The most popular techniques in the reservoir are fly fishing or drift fishing; anglers may also consider fishing from kayaks. A dirt launching site is available in the south parking lot. Fish species to look out for in Bussey Brake include largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and redear sunfish. There is a  creel limit of 25 10-inches or more crappie and 50 bream like bluegill and redear sunfish a day. 

West of Bastrop, the Ouachita Wildlife Management Area and the 605-mile-long Ouachita River is found, providing more recreational freshwater fishing. Anglers may expect to catch largemouth bass, bluegill, white bass, spotted bass, chain pickerel, striped bass, flathead catfish, blue catfish, channel catfish, redear sunfish, smallmouth bass, crappie, bowfin, warmouth, common carp, and rainbow trout here.
