Just a couple of miles south of Buffalo, NY is a quaint town known for the beautiful rolling foothills, wide farmlands, wooded areas, and tranquil bodies of water. Yes, it’s the perfect destination for those looking to have a great time in the great outdoors without having to travel very far from the city. It’s also not as popular as any other outdoor recreational locations, which means you get to enjoy fun and relaxing outdoor activities without having to deal with the crowds.

The town of Freedom in the northeast corner of Cattaraugus County in Upstate New York is an ideal destination for those who want a calmer and more relaxing vacation. Yes, it may not have the world-class accommodations and manicured golf courses that other more popular vacation spots may have but it’s what actually makes this town much appealing, especially if you really want some peace and quiet. The place offers a real escape from the hassles of a more “developed” town.

But just because it’s not as popular as other destinations, it doesn’t mean that you won’t find anything interesting here. In fact, the town is literally surrounded by state parks that feature so many amazing views of the natural wonders of Upstate New York. Aside from the sceneries, you can also delve into a number of thrilling or relaxing activities such as camping, hiking, boating, and, of course, fishing.

Freedom: Superb Fishing Off the Beaten Track

The town of Freedom and the surrounding areas are blessed with a lot of lakes, ponds, creeks, and brooks that offer superb fishing. Within the town’s boundaries alone are three bodies of water that are full of stocked and wild game fish. Crystal Lake, for instance, supports a healthy number of smallmouth bass, perch, and white perch. Aside from the fishing opportunity, the lake also offers a respite from the noise of the city as it features tranquil and clear waters. Another body of water worth mentioning is the Moores Pond that is quite similar to Crystal Lake but a bit smaller. Perfect for inshore fishing and fly fishing. Here, you can try your luck catching some smallmouth bass, crappies, and other fish. Just north of Moores Pond is Clear Creek, a tributary of the much bigger Cattaraugus Creek. The waters of Clear Creek are perfect for fly fishing as it supports a wide array of fly fishing targets including brown trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout.

If you don’t mind driving just a couple of hours southward, you’d find Ischua Creek and Allegheny River, two fishing locations that are popular among local anglers. In the Allegheny River, you can land some more challenging fish including smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, and the elusive muskie. As for Ischua Creek, the long and winding body of water supports a healthy stock of trout.
