Greensboro Fishing: Enthralling Freshwater Lake Fishing in North Carolina’s Heartland

angler fishing in the middle of the water body

Whether you want to have a relaxing time or experience an exciting endeavor, Greensboro delivers when it comes to diverse angling opportunities.

Most fishing in the city is done by boat because bank fishing isn’t allowed. If you want to cast your line in shallow water or onshore, fishing piers are available in all city lakes. You’ll find Lake Brandt in the northwest. You can catch largemouth bass, white crappie, black crappie, channel catfish, and blue catfish in its waters; you can also reel in bluegill, yellow perch, pumpkinseed, redear sunfish, black bullhead, common carp, and panfish. The 816-acre reservoir is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. Its operating hours are from 8 AM to 5 PM; you can launch your boat or vessel from the ramp located at Lake Brandt Marina. Piers are located off Bur-Mil Park and near the marina. Boat rentals and fishing gear and equipment are available close by as well.

To the left of Lake Brandt, you’ll spot the smaller Lake Higgins. If you want to find a great trout fishing and fly fishing spot, this is the great place. The adjacent Taylor Turner Hatchery Pond annually stocks rainbow trout. Other fish you can target from the lake are blue catfish, channel catfish, flathead catfish, sunfish, chain pickerel, largemouth bass, bluegill, white crappie, black crappie, black bullhead, and yellow bullhead. Its dam area also hosts similar species as well as common carp. It has the same operating days and hours as Lake Brandt but is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. You can fish by boat or from the pier located in the marina.

The largest lake in Greensboro is Lake Townsend, primarily built for recreation. There are large and small boat ramps from which you can launch your private vessels. Popular targets you’ll find include largemouth bass, hybrid striped bass, striped bass, white bass, channel catfish, white crappie, black crappie, and bluegill. You can find its fishing pier and marina at the Lake Townsend Yacht Club, which is open to the public. Like the other city lakes, Lake Townsend is available from 8 AM to 5 PM and is closed on the holidays and on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Those willing to travel further out can also go to Lake Norman to the southwest. Or you can even travel past Charlotte and experience more angling in South Carolina to the south. If you head further east, you can get the chance to fish from the Atlantic Ocean or seaside towns like Carolina Beach. There, you may catch saltwater species like dolphin. There are tons of places nearby that are also great for the family, and whatever water or outdoor activity you wish to do. Searching for a nearby national park or river is a great place to start.

Visitors can book fishing charters if they want to make the most of a fishing trip in Greensboro. More notes on local waterways, customer service, and information on amenities can be accessed online. Print outs can also be searched for more data.

1. Learn More About the Civil Rights Movement

The city is home to the International Civil Rights Center and Museum, which was the site of the non-violent civil rights protests in the 1960s to 1970s. The art deco-style museum is located on 134 S Elm Street, where a branch of a Woolworth’s store used to be. It offers docent-led or self-guided tours. The four students from A&T College, who started the sit-in protests against segregation in 1960, are introduced and portrayed through a reenactment at the museum.

2. Explore the City Through Art

You’ll see tons of murals that adorn local buildings and infrastructures throughout the city. Those murals result from the Greensboro Mural Project, which aims to make the city healthier and vibrant through art. The murals also act as a tool to communicate and record Greensboro’s history. The murals can be found at the Interactive Resource Center, Lindsay Street, Friendly Avenue, Spring Garden, and other locations.
