About Lake Austin, TX

Lake Austin is located in Matagorda County, Texas on the northern part of the Big Boggy National Wildlife Refuge. It is also just 12 miles southeast of Bay City, which is situated in southeastern Matagorda County. 

It is believed that this natural lake got its name from Stephen F. Austin. Austin is the recipient of the land grant made in 1830 and Lake Austin formed the eastern and northeastern border of this land grant. 

Peyton Creek feeds Lake Austin and it eventually empties its waters into Live Oak Bayou and then to East Matagorda Bay, which can be found two miles south. There are other bodies of water found near Lake Austin, such as Cedar Lakes, Cooling Water Reservoir, and many more.
