Bunkie is a city located in the Louisiana parish of Avoyelles. Bunkie was built as a terminus, the last station on the Texas and Pacific Railroad line. The area now known as Bunkie was first called Irion after its first resident, Major Irion. Captain Samuel Haas, who had participated actively in the Civil War, built his home in this region of Avoyelles Parish in 1878. He quickly rose to the position of the largest landowner in the Avoyelles Parish. According to local stories, Captain Haas brought his young daughter a monkey when he returned from a trip to New Orleans. In her excitement, Maccie Haas pronounced "monkey" as "bunkie." She became his little "Bunkie" after the incident. When asked to name the new depot, the captain proposed his daughter's nickname. Maccie's alias has since become synonymous with Bunkie.

1. Celebrate Louisiana’s Corn Festival 

Bunkie is a perfect spot for tourists who loves festivals, as Bunkie hosts the Louisiana Corn Festival every second weekend of June. The Bunkie Chamber of Commerce in Louisiana started the festival in 1987 to celebrate the contribution of agriculture to the local economy and to showcase the wonderful people who reside there. The festival consists of different pageants, events, and awards. Live bands, street dances, arts and crafts booths, and food booths are all there to tempt you with their mouthwatering offerings.

2. Bunkie’s Mural

The town post office contains a mural by Caroline Speare Rohland titled Cotton Pickers in 1939. Tourists are welcome to visit this area in Bunkie. Between 1934 and 1943, the Section of Painting and Sculpture of the Treasury Department—later known as the Section of Fine Arts—produced murals on federal orders in Louisiana and across the country.
