Enjoy a peaceful fishing trip in a small town down in Southern Vermont, where the West River flows through. Add Londonderry to your Vermont itinerary if you’re looking for an off-the-beaten destination where you can immerse in the quintessential New England atmosphere without dealing with crowds.

Little is known about Londonderry's prehistory, but archeological evidence suggests that the Abenakis tribe may have passed through the area where the town now stands. Of its recent history, one of the most significant is the establishment of Magic Mountain, once a legendary skiing destination that was designed to rival those in the Swiss Alps. After a few challenging years and even threats of closing down, Magic Mountain has been revived after a group of local ski enthusiasts banded together to keep it in operation. Today, it remains one of Vermont’s best-kept secrets and a bucket list destination for die-hard ski fans.

Another one of the state’s best-kept secrets? Londonderry’s good fishing spots. Consider adding this beautifully quaint town to your travel list if you’re hankering for some fantastic freshwater fishing next time you’re in Southern Vermont.

Londonderry Fishing: Fine Freshwater Fishing in Southern Vermont

There are plenty of productive fishing areas in and around Londonderry, many of the tributaries of the great West River, which is itself a major tributary of the Connecticut River.

Start your Londonderry fishing journey at Lowell Lake State Park, a state park built around the 102-acre Lowell Lake. Once known as the Great Pond, locals have always loved Lowell Lake. Its clean waters hold largemouth bass, chain pickerel, pumpkinseed sunfish, yellow perch, northern pike, black bass, and bullhead. No motorized boats are allowed to ensure the state park’s peaceful atmosphere, but you can launch a kayak or canoe in the water or, better still, fish from the shore.

In the 707-acre Gale Meadows Wildlife Management Area, you will find the Gale Meadows Pond. This man-made body of water has an undeveloped shoreline and is home to fish species such as yellow perch, largemouth bass, bluegill, chain pickerel, and brown bullhead.

Want to fish the great West River itself? Head to nearby Jamaica State Park. The park sits at the West River bend and has long been a favorite among anglers because of its unique combo of fast ripples and slow-running waters. Some fish species you can target in the river include rainbow trout, brown trout, and smallmouth bass.

You can also fish the West River when you camp and hike at the Winhall Brook Camping Area. Apart from the river, the camping ground gives anglers access to Winhall Brook and Ball Mountain Lake. With several shore fishing access and boat launches amid stunning forests that support diverse wildlife, you can enjoy fishing for brook trout, rainbow trout, and brown trout.
