Cayuga is a small village known to be one of the region’s favorite vacation spot. It may be small but its perfect location just at the northeast shores of Cayuga Lake more than makes up for its rather minute square-mileage. Besides providing visitors with an easy access to the longest and the second largest of the six major Finger Lakes, the charming village of Cayuga is surrounded by three state parks that feature scenic trails, nature preserves, and forests, which, unsurprisingly, attracts thousands of nature lovers every year.

Given its natural beauty, one would probably assume that the village is just for outdoor recreational enthusiasts. But given Cayuga’s booming historical and cultural scenes, not to mention the shopping centers, small shops, and the restaurants just a few minutes away from the village, there are definitely plenty of fun things to do for everybody.

Cayuga, NY Fishing

Cayuga Lake, the longest and the second largest of the renowned Finger Lakes, can easily be accessed on the western edge of the village. It’s because of this that many anglers from all over the state come here to experience some of the best fishing in the country. The fact that the lake supports a wide range of both cold and warm water species makes fishing here a whole year affair.

During spring and summer, when the weather is quite warm, for instance, anglers take advantage of the healthy population of warm water targets, which include smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, rainbow trout, brown trout, lake trout, pickerel, and panfish. If sportfishing enthusiasts are going to be targeting cold water species like northern pike, bluegill, pumpkinseed, brown bullhead, gizzard shad, yellow perch, and Atlantic salmon, fall months is always the best time to go.

Winter is also quite a busy time for many anglers here as one can still either go fishing out in the open waters or just straight up go ice fishing—that is if the ice is thick enough to be safely walked upon, of course. If you’re up for some ice fishing, yellow perch, northern pike, and different varieties of trout are some of the prized catch during wintertime.

Family Fun at Cayuga via Water, Land, and Air

Cayuga is a perfect all-around family vacation destination where you can explore the water, land, and air with your loved ones. Here’s how:

1. Explore the Water

Take advantage of the great sceneries in and around the lake by taking your family on a boating trip. Sure, you can always take a motorized boat but to best experience Mother Nature, we highly recommend exploring the scenic lake on a canoe, kayak, or paddleboard.

2. Explore the Land

Take your kids on an adventure around the state parks in and around the village of Cayuga via the trails that pass through the most scenic route. It doesn’t matter if you go on foot, on a bike, on an ATV, or on horseback, the spectacular views will surely blow you away. Wintertime trips can also be fun and exhilarating as you can go on a snowmobile or maybe try your hand at cross-country skiing.

3. Explore the Air

Yes, skydiving is actually quite a popular sport in the region with the premier professional skydiver training facility located at the Whitford Airport just a few miles east of Cayuga County. If skydiving is a bit over-the-top for you, you can maybe go on a hot-air balloon tour over the beautiful Finger Lakes.
