From a mill town to a streetcar suburb, Ludlow owes its developments to what it once was. Now, Ludlow is known as a destination near Springfield and a stand-alone destination of its own. It caters to families and kids, as safe and clean parks are scattered around it to give an exciting and friendly environment for the kids and young people. The Lupa Zoo prides itself on being an affordable place for children to see and interact with beautiful wildlife. Facing Rock and High Hill Loop, Ludlow Country Club and Ludlow Tennis Club await sports enthusiasts who live for the thrill of physical activities. Or maybe, Titanic Historical Society, a museum with numerous memorabilia from the famous Royal Mail Ship, is what would pull you closer to the town. Whatever the reason, Ludlow’s diversity of people is a testament to its welcoming culture-centered community.
Ludlow is a destination for modest anglers and gives serene fishing opportunities to everyone all year round. If anyone thinks that Chicopee River is the only fishing spot in the south of Ludlow, maybe booking a trip and getting their gear ready can prove them wrong.
Chicopee River allows many brooks to stem from it and criss-cross over Ludlow as a fast-moving stream. As one of the most popular places to fish in Ludlow, a good day of fishing in the river can bag any of the following fish species: largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, striped bass, brown trout, channel catfish, common carp, bluegill, and shad.
To the southeast of town is Chicopee River Reservoir, a serene, warm-water habitat for anglers looking to fly fish and catch some white and yellow perch that overpopulates the impoundment. A steep and paved boat ramp caters to all types of boats and is available for anglers who love to do drift fishing. Species found in the reservoir include brown bullhead, yellow bullhead, pumpkinseed, chain pickerel, and crappie.
Northeast of Ludlow is Springfield Reservoir, another relatively tranquil fishing spot, with species like largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, yellow and white perch, bluegill, and black crappie all ready to be fished out. Rock bass comes out as a surprise from time to time.
The Ludlow Fish and Game Club hosts an annual Youth Fishing Derby in which children can participate and register for free. The event includes a casting contest, and children of all ages can fish for brook trout up to 14 inches long in the banks of Higher Brook. What a fun event to see while on vacation or a getaway!
Ludlow fishing is productive all year round, especially in the Chicopee River. During fall and early spring, all ponds and reservoirs get stocked by trout species to ensure competitive fishing opportunities to locals and visitors any time of the year. Get the gear ready, and don’t forget the bug repellents in summer!
